Synthetic VS Fossil

Just purchased an 02 Pitbull. I did not have any idea when the last oil change was so decided to change it. Just found and read the owners manual. Was kind of shocked to see that BDM DOES NOT recommend synthetic oil. Can I get some thoughts?
