Summer oil weight VS. Winter oil weight

liferider

Looking forward to retirement
What weights do you run in your Big Twin in the hot summer and what weight oil during the winter. Or do you keep the 20/50 year round. Slow traffic in June at the ROT two years ago in 5 o'clock traffic, I had to turn 1800 rpm to make 10 pounds of oil pressure on my HD Ultra Classic. The motor had gotten hot and the Mobile 1 broke down.

I use 20/50 year round including every year at ROT! I watch my oil pressure and temperature when at ROT. Once warm, it is not uncommon in the summer months to be at 5 psig oil pressure. My Oil temperature rarely goes above 215 degrees fahrenheit and I have no Oil cooler. In the winter, my oil temperature is always just less than 200 degrees fahrenheit.

I've been contemplating something other than the 20w50 for the summer. Not sure what,or if its worth it. St.Louis doesn't quite have Louisiana heat, and humidity, but its still pretty friggin miserable.

I'll prob get blasted for this ...but Amsoil has a 60w that I'm going to run this summer when it gets hot this summer , I run the 20w50 Amsoil most of the time but in traffic when it gets very hot I hear the valve train "top end noise" I thought I would try this to try and combat this problem . Hears a few links to the "New" weight
Amsoil 60w High-Performance Lubricant for Motorcycle Engines and Transmissions
It states its for BIG bore bikes in description
APPLICATIONS
AMSOIL Synthetic SAE 60 Motorcycle Oil is recommended for early-model air-cooled V-Twin engines where a 60-weight motor oil is specified. SAE 60 motor oils are commonly used in Harley-Davidson® Knucklehead, Panhead, Shovelhead and big-bore motorcycles. AMSOIL Synthetic SAE 60 Motorcycle Oil meets API SG, SL/CF; API GL-1; JASO MA/MA2 and ISO-L-EMA2.

Blasted? Why?

I have been contemplating the same thing. The Chart in the S&S Manaul States

SAE20W50 - 30-100
SAE 50 - 60-100
SAE 60 - Above 80

Come End of May unless I'm up riding at 3 AM I'd be lucky if I can find <80 degree weather to ride in

As an FYI S&S Manual recommends that if you are operating at temps above 250 Regularly install an oil cooler. On the flip side if you are <180 dont use an oil cooler - or cover it.

Amsoil 20/50 will be in today, not going to run this redline stuff anymore.
