Stripped Set Screw

Well finally got the sissy bar installed. I was snugging the last set screw(29) and it happened :rant::angry::bang:

I've read were some have had issues with these so I was very careful. Removal was a snap and putting them back was a snap for the first 3 any how :bang::bang:

So my question is how do i get that bugger out? It's a tiny mother f'r the head is 1/8" socket. I have seen screw extractor bits but not sure if there is a bit for a hex head. thanks for your help

Wish you were here I would get it out for ya. You might have to look around to find the very small ones but they are out there. Better idea , take you scooter by a decent machine shop and just ask them if they would have "Any idea how you could get that stripped set screw out". Practice saying this in kinda a whiney voice. :panic2:You can get one of those guys to get it out quick and painlessly. and probably fix it as well.

If you can't get it out with an extractor just run a size down drill bit straight through it all the way. Once you take out the center you can get a little extractor in there and it should come right out. If there is any locktite in there make sure you heat it with a torch first.

Try another hex wrench before anything else. Sometimes the less expensive tools are not made to specs and may be a tad small hence striping out.

Hey Todd,

These are all good suggestions for removing the screw. :2thumbs:

I have the same bike and when I purchased the bike.....the sissy bar was already installed. And when I went to remove the sissy bar I stripped the head out of 3 of the screws.:bang:

I ended up taking it to a Big Dog service shop and had them remove the screws before I screwed up anything else at that point.

But since then I have learned a few small tips.:)
1. Before I put the sissy bar on.....I take a small screw driver and stick it in the slot and I make sure those little dog ears are pushed to the outside.
2. Then I put the sissy bar on. By inserting it into the slots.
3. These screws are very delicate and so are the threads. So before I try to put in a screw.....I take a really small allen wrench and stick it up in the screw hole. I then try to make sure that the little dog ear in the slot gets pushed to the side so that when you start putting the screws in.....the dog ear is out of the way.
4. If that dog ear is blocking the screw's path, then you start to have a problem tightening the screw. Thus ....stripping out the head.
5. I should also mention that my screws do not appear to go in square. They are at a bit of an angle.
6. Once you get those screws in. Don't over tighten them. I actually use no loctite on these screws. Because they are already difficult enough to remove.
7. I tend to carry that little allen wrench in my pocket. And check the screws half way thru my ride.
8. I also keep extra screws on hand. If I even get the slightest feeling that the threads on the screw are a little messed up, or if the head is stripped even slightly......I shit can the screw and use a new one.

On a side note.....I have the drag handle bar & solo seat kit on my 2008 Pitbull. And I love it. :D It made a huge difference in the looks of the bike, as well as the ride.

It may be a rigid.....but it's now one of the most comfortable riding bikes I have ever had the pleasure to ride.:2thumbs:
