Has anyone had any problems with their steering wheel handle bar freezing up or being stuck in place?? I own a 2004 BIG DOG Ridgeback and had encountered an unfortunate incident. Any reply would be appreciated.

Dude, you're going to have to give us a bit more info. I've never seen a steering wheel on a bike except for one custom made by Arlen back in the 70's.

If you have your handlebars sticking then grease the stem bearings!!!

My bad, the incident I occurred was on the freeway and the handlebars locked up where it couldn't turn right or turn left. While riding, I heard a clicking sound around the handlebar area. Is there a grease nipple for the steering bearing? Cuz mine don't have one.

Ok, if you are on Fort Weaver road then maybe you got stuck in a big rut!!!!

So when you say it locked up do you mean that it's stuck now and you can't turn the bars left or right?
Either way you need to pull the trees and check out the races and bearings.

The handlebars unlocked when I forced it to turn. It took a hard force, so it could be the bearings. Will be bringing it to the dealer to have it checked out.
Mahalo for the reply.

You taking it to Cycle City? Isn't there another dealer there now out on Farmington Hwy?

Lets us know what they find.

Mahalo,

i've seen before where the internal fork stops that big dog uses will fail if you drop the bike. The bottom plate on that fork stop screws into the lower tripple tree with 4 very small cs bolts. Upon dropping the bike the heads of these will break off, allowing the bars to hit the tank. It will also cause the steering to lock up, and in some cases i've seen it act like bad bearings.

It happened to me, but mine never got to where it locked up. Check the big Jesus bolt under the neck. The locking screw came loose, and the bolt started to back out. As it backs out, the bearings get play, and the rake of the forks forces them crooked, causing them to bind. The steering will get progressively stiffer, but if you're on the highway you may not notice until it gets really bad. I had no idea because I was on a long trip. Once I got on back roads I knew something was wrong. You gotta get the front end off the ground, and tighten that thing back up if it's loose.

Is the airbag still in tact?

I was having a hell of a time getting around corners on my bike. I was just to embarrassed to ask if anyone else was missing a steering wheel. Man I feel so much better i was getting very tired of just going straight.

Bike is still in the shop. After their investigation, they're waiting for a reply from BIGDOG to see what they have to say. So still waiting.

Ray, btw it's not Farmington Hwy, it's Farrington Hwy. Shaka!

Aloha!
You're right. Been some time since I lived there. Mahalo

Just got the bike running again. Cycle City found the lower triple tree head bolt was loose and had replaced the triple tree, new steering bearings, and new forks.
