Starting Problem, Lights on Module on All The Time?

Energy One
Hey All, names D.J., new to the forum. I'm from central Ohio and own a Bike and Powder Coating shop..........not here to promote my business though.

I have an 04 Pit Bull that came to us because the guy lost his keys. We put in a new key switch and got it back to the customer and he said it was acting weird and not starting. Got it back to the shop, had keys made for his old ignition, re-installed and still have the same problem. I noticed that the red LED lights on the module under the seat get dim when the key is off but they stay on a little bit, is that normal? Not the thunder heart aluminum box, its the one with the multiple LEDs.

Also, we put the battery on the tender, took like 15 hours to charge......and this was a new battery the guy put in and supposedly charged. The battery was reading 13.50 after charge, hooked up to the bike. Checked periodically through the day and it slowly dropped till the next morning it was 13.23. Tried to start it and it started fine. Left it another day and now it will not start. Battery is reading 13.15, then like 12.90 with key on. When you hit the button to start it clicks the solenoid and the volt meter jumps quickly to 9.80 then right back to 13.15. Is there a chance that it is the battery or could it be the starter or solenoid?

Any advice would help, look forward to chatting with all of you on here.

Later, D.J.

Welcome to the site DJ, I think you will enjoy it here.

As for the Pitbull I would first ask:

1. What is the CCA of the battery the guy bought. It needs to be at least 270.
2. When you turn the key on what lights are lit up on the EHC?
3. When you hit the "run" button what lights are lit up on the EHC?
4. Check all the battery connections and ensure they are properly grounded and tight.

Could be a lot of things so a bit more info would help us help you. I would check to ensure the three wires on the back of the coil are tight and in good shape. I would ensure the wiring harness is connected to the EHC tightly. This pin connector should be full of die electric grease. Just be careful not to bend a pin.

1. From what I can tell by cross-referencing the number it is 300 CCA.
2. All lights on the EHC are on but dim then when I turn the key on, all lights are lit up bright.
3. When I switch from off to run all lights dim but are still lit other than the one on the far right side.
4. All ground and battery terminals are tight.

The main thing that I am unsure of is if the lights on the EHC stay lit when the key is off. When the key is on, the lights are very bright. When the key is off the lights dim but do not completely shut off. Is that normal.

Thanks, D.J.

With the exceptoin of the power, ignition and another one all the rest of the lights are ground fault lits. I would reset the connector on the EHC and ensure it's full of dieelectric grease and see if that helps. Otherwise he may be in for a new EHC.
The 04 is not available anymore so he would have to have a conversion one to adapt the 04 to the 05 style as you see here.

I would also send a pm to Night Train. He is a member here that was an engineer at Big Dog in the electronics department. He may be able to offer you more info. He may be on here later today also.

Good luck,
Ray

This is the new 05 EHC module but gives you an idea of what the lights are for.

The lights should not be lit when the switch is off. As Ray said check the the connector at the EHC be sure the pins are clean and dry and then liberally coat the connector with dielelctic grease. Also check the wiring to see if you have any chaffed wires or bad connections.

Oh yea, welcome to the site.
