'99 BD Vintage Sport.
I have read all the threads on starters that I can find in the forums, ran all the tests described and still have an issue that I can't resolve. The solenoid problem is that we have 12.7 volts at the green wire when the start button is pushed, and we have good contact at the black ground wire, but the solenoid shaft does not make contact with the connector points. The Slam button works fine, so, everything downstream of the solenoid works. When we use the starter switch there is a faint click near the rear and under the tank. We tried removing the slam switch to check the internals and they all look fine. With the key on, green wire connected, solenoid internals in place, we depressed the start button and got zero reaction from the coil. While holding the button and manually moving the solenoid, there was no reaction until the solenoid shaft made contact with the internal contacts at which point, the bike turned over. The bike does not have electronic compression release.
Does anyone think that rebuilding the solenoid would be the correct next step? Can the solenoid coil be rebuilt? The parts I see in the rebuild kits are only the shaft, contacts, spring, and a couple short wires.
It seems everything upstream of the green wire is working, except there may be a micro switch that is making the clicking and I don't know what that does.
I think it's time to pull the starter. Do I have to pull the primary to remove the starter? Can I pull the solenoid without pulling the starter?
