what are symptoms of a starter relay going bad? My starter was just rebuilt, brand new tomokio battery...load tested, everything fine. yet i still get a click every so often. Is this a starter relay problem?

If you're getting a "click" in the starter that means the starter relay (actually a start control module in your bike) and solenoid are working. If the starter doesn't turn I'd suspect the contacts in the solenoid first. You may want to pull the solenoid cover off, pull out the plunger and check/clean the contacts. If they're all good you could have an intermittent "hold in" coil or worst case, a bad winding in the starter motor.

There's a number of stickies in the "How To" section the may help if you need them but definitely do what Butch suggests and make sure all your connections are clean and snug especially the main power/ground wires!

I just replaced the starter relay in my bike today. Its got 5 male ends plugs into obviously 5 female ends 1 in middle 4 around it. If you hit your start button and all you hear is it clicking and its not turning over and all the connections to battery are tight. 1st thing you do is if you have a back up button on starter press it. If it engages and starts your bike there you go your starter relay is shot cost about $15 to replace if your putting it in yourself which I did. If you don't have a back up button on your starter and are still getting a clicking I'd have to say 90% its your starter relay and for $15 I'd start there and change that and see if it fix's problem.

My OEM 2005 RT chopper with about 30,000 trouble free miles on it, started to have intermittent cranking issues a while ago which rendered it unreliable and bike has been sitting for about a year. Installed new battery and new starter and checked ground connections. With Ignition on, run switch on, start button pushed, compression release valves activate, head light goes off but starter does not engage. Motor will crank and run if started with manual solenoid button and everything works as it should. Shuts down normally. I have the BD maintenance manuals but when I get to the part that says see starter relay check there doesn't seem to be a check listed. There is no reference for the start relay part number. Can you pass on that info?

Another oddity appeared about the same time as the crank issue started. When the ignition key is turned on the analog speedometer needle cycles but does not always always return to 0 MPH and the error remains until ignition is shut off. The variance is between 0 and 40 MPH, each time the ignition switch is recycled the needle drops about 10 mph and will settle correctly at 0 mph. I have no idea if the two observations are related but they appeared almost if not simultaneously. Any trouble shooting help would be appreciated.

I have an 07 Big Dog K9 I'm not sure if the wiring is the same as yours but on Mine the compression release is at the same time the starter solenoid gets activated by the EHC. Pull the wire off the starter solenoid and read it when you hit the start switch. You should get 12volts. If you get the 12v the solenoid or connection is bad. If not the ehc is not sending the voltage required to activate it. The problem could be the wire or the ehc itself. The only job for the solenoid is to connect the + side of the Battery to the starter. The starter itself is grounded to the frame completing the circuit. When you use your slam button it doesn't need the solenoid to activate which is why it works.
Because your having additional issues with speedometer You could check the connections to the EHC. Pull them and re-seat maybe the connection needs a little TLC after 15 years. 30K with no issues is awesome!!

Do you happen to know the part number for that starter relay for the big dog motorcycle?

03 & Earlier were the only models with a separate starter relay's. In 04 it was integrated into the EHC and it's integrated into any of the new modules available now.

Based on your picture, that bike wouldn't have a separate relay
