2004 Chopper RT, I’m about to pull my starter see what give with the whining. Pulled primary and the starter gear was barley hangin on the ring gear. Barley like is I moved my ring gear 1/32” the gear would pull back. I’d like to rebuild it, I see the solenoid kit but I don’t see a starter drive clutch, Is one available?
I was wondering should I replace the old ring gear with the new Zodiac? I don’t know if it has ever been replaced but the old ring gear looks in new condition.

There's a spring on the jackshaft assembly which allows a little play. From what your saying that appears normal, especially if ring gear looks new nothing appears to be malfunctioning.

That gear on the starter is held on with a bolt and locking tab, there's a spacer and a spring too. But if you think there's a problem the jackshaft assembly kit will have all the replacement parts. Starter drive clutch would be unrelated.

If ring gear looks new I wouldn't worry about it, usually the outside facing looks new wears more on the inside, and you really gotta take your clutch basket out to inspect. However if you got no starter grind I would keep running the current ring gear.
