Starter Oil Leak/Rebuild Question

Okay, got the starter rebuild kit to fix the oil leak coming out of the starter for my 05 chopper. The kit looks the same as whats in the starter with the exception of a flat washer. What is the flat washer for?

rrruff not sure about the washer but would like to know where you got the rebuild kit and the cost. Also what is different about the kit that will stop the oil leaks. I just tore my starter down yesterday to inspect it because of the oil leaks and this thing had alot of oil in it. I sprayed it down with carb cleaner and electrical cleaner and put it back together.

Not sure the situation with the flat washer, could you get a picture of it. I know that there is one that goes at the end where the circlip is (I think that is right). Also if not mistaken the kit has a second seal with it that is the item that is supposed to help keep the oil from seeping to electrical.

I have the kit in my garage and will look later. I have not had my starter taken apart, but bought the kit in case I need to later. Since my original starter got replaced due to leaking oil from the winding, I have had no issues with it in over 2 years and close to 20k.

BTW how much was your kit, mine was just short of $10.00 and that was with the Electra Klean.

Ok, got the starter back together tonight and took it around the block for a test ride no problems. The flat washer went next to the seal on the jack shaft and the gear that engages the gear on the clutch pack, right next to the seal. I guess its supposed to protect the seal, anyway that's the only place it would fit. Only one seal though and the only thing that was different was the flat washer. The seal contact area on the jack shaft had some scars on it and I polished them out. I bought two kits just in case I screwed up the first seal, both kits had the flat washer in them. I am going to give Scott at Full House Cycles a call and try to get the info on the washer. Jeffbradford got the kit at Full House Cycles (540)667-0088. The kit was $9.00 and some change but they were marked wrong. They were supposed to be $29.00 and some change. Fiber let me know if your kit has two seals in it because mine only had one. Putting that circle clip on while holding the spring down was a real pain.

Yea that's what mine looked like too. My brushes had caked up burnt oil on them. You need to get the armature out also and dry out the windings. I got in touch with Full House Cycles yesterday and as I expected the service department was closed but I will try to get in touch today to get some questions hopefully answered.

Okay, here's the deal with the flat washer. Its a tool, used for installing the seal to be sure it is flush, according to Scott at Full House Cycles. Duh!!:loony: I guess this would be an issue if you didn't tear the starter all the way down. You could slide the seal on the followed by the washer then use a socket to drive the seal in. Any way that's the scoope on the washer/tool.
