Started tearing apart the Chopper

Well after alot of playing around with paints I decided its time to repaint the Chopper. I started tearing it down the other day, got the tank, fenders and side covers off. The front fender had a small dent and chipped paint on the front lip so I started chipping any loose paint off and it just started flaking off. I ended up stripping the front and rear fenders down to the base primer with a razor blade, it just came off in little sheets, bad adhesion I guess. The tank is in perfect shape so I may just sand it down and repaint over the factory paint to save alot of work, havent decided yet. I'm hoping to do any bodywork which is minimal and have them in epoxy primer this weekend. Using House of Kolor primer then going with a black base coat with airbrushed blue fire, and SPI clear. I'm confident on the paint as I've painted my old 2001 Softail and my 72 Duster, but gonna be nervous on the airbrushing, cause a mess up means a repaint. But I figure screw it, its just paint and I can do it over again if I'm not happy.
Should be a fun couple of weeks, sucks not to be able to ride but I had to do it before it gets too cold to paint as I'm doing it in my garage with minimal heating. Keeping my fingers crossed that it comes out good. Heres a few pics...

That is really bad how the fender paint came off. Was it repainted at some point? If paint was done at same time, Id be real concerned.

Your test part looks great. Just a thought, can you add some color variation to the flames?

Also agree, now is a good time to address the inside, and paint saver/gas cap if needed.

Thanks guys, can't wait to get it done. I was really surprised how the paint came off, I've stripped many things and never had it come off like that. As far as I know it's the factory paint job, something must have went wrong. As far as the liner, I did notice a loose chunk in the tank, but no signs or it leaking as the paint on the tank is perfect. And I got the paint saver off and I'm gonna look for a new gasket for it.

Jwooky, as far as the colors, I'm doing it using the same steps as Mike Lavelle who started the true fire craze. It's layered with cobalt blue over white, and oriental blue over white, with a few lighter highlights. In person it has alot of depth, and color variation.

Familiar with his work. As I zoom in and look at it more closely I can see the range now. Sure it looks 100 times better in person with light shifts.
Yeah its crazy how it looks in different light. In low light or shade it almost looks all black from a distance, in regular light it looks like darker flames with alot of depth, and once in the sun it really pops and is a bright blue. Still have alot to learn as far as airbrushing goes, but I'm willing to give it a shot, paint isn't permanent!

Nice job Butch, looks good:old2:unbelievable how the old paint just chipped off. On another note, you know we like to look around when someone posts pics of the surroundings and I noticed you started to chip out that crack in your floor and wanted to say I'm good with a hammer n chisel:oldlaugh: if you need that finished:oldlaugh:

:oldlaugh: Yeah that one of things that got started and never finished ,quite a few of those things around the house. Was planning on fixing the crack and epoxy coating the floor, but the more stuff I got, means I have to move it all to epoxy, as you can see it never happened.

Ya it's illegal here to , but I do it anyway. It can't read top to bottom, so it can at least read left to right and be aligned to the light.
