speedo becoming loose

I was coming home from work today when I noticed my speedo was vibrating more than usual. It looks like it might be coming a little loose at the top of the mount. Is this where they begin to shear off. I can't see a way of securing it tighter. It's still the original and I have an 05.

check with your dealer, it should be covered under the bdm recall to get you the new and improved version. (i think)

Damn, and you still have the old white faced speedo. Didn't think there was any of those left around. :D

Turn the bars and there is two small bolts that hold that thing to the bars. They should be real tight cause the whole reason for the new wider bracket is vibration that kills the speedo's.

Your dealer needs to get you a new speedo and bracket. You already qualify for it with your 05.

Hey, I have a white one on my '05 too! :D

I had seen this speedo issue mentioned before but never actually got around to checking mine out. I checked it just now- the lil bastard is indeed loose.

Thanks for bringing this up. Just in time too, I'll be taking my bike in next week for it's 5k

Yeah you will need a really long allen to get in there. I suggest the 4 in versions with ball ends. You can get them at Sears or Harbor Frieght.

You will find the allens under the mount behind the wire

Here's a good show of the difference in the mounts.

re

I called BD today and they told me that the new bracket was not a recall item nor the speedo (at least for my bike in paticular???????). They checked my vin# for service bulletins and updates and all that's out-standing is the recall on the voltage regulator. But she made it sound like if there is nothing wrong with it then don't really worry. I told her, well if there is going to be something wrong w/ it, it will come w/o warning on the road and I don't want that. So she said I'd probably want to order one from the dealership a head of time.

I'm going to break my allen wrenches out tonight and try to tighten that speedo bracket. What size are those allen bolts up in there?

Thanks for the help guys

narow37 and i went down to savannah yesterday to have the speedos changed out. apparently there are different brackets for the k9/chopper and the prostreet bikes. shane's was good but they must have sent one for a prostreet for mine because it ended up having about 20plus degrees too much angle on the face. made it difficult to see the full face of the speedo.
ordering another one.
the action of the speedo is lot smoother with no vibration but it still fogs up.
not as bad, though(yet).

That's a bunch of crap. You should call BDM and they will take care of your dealer. May not hurt to tell them your current speedo is not working properly though!
Good luck,
Ray

Chuck like gas said they told me that the bracket only applies to the 05 and up. Most likely because of the handlebar differences. So in your case I would think it applies. Suppose depends on who you talk too on what day of the week and what kind of mood there in. Just keep calling until you get the answer you want then ask them to give you a confimation number so you can get one.

I wonder if a dealer couldn't just order a new stem. Saying I don't know... the old one was broke or messed up in some manner.
