Does it still do the diagnostic "sweep" upon turning the key? I'm assuming the '04 works like the '05, but I could be wrong.

Back when my '05 Chopper's speedo stopped working, it would power up OK, do its diagnostic "sweep", and everything else worked on it (IE: Tach, turn signal LEDs, etc).

It was as if it just wasn't getting the signal from the speed sensor. After verifying all the connections, I finally took the speedo apart and found that the signal wire had broken where it goes into the speedo's circuit board. Soldered it back together, and it's been fine since.

The speedometer and speedo sensor both receive their power from the EHC. However, the signal is a straight through circuit and is not affected or conditioned by the EHC.

If your speedo or sensor is losing power, this is possibly an EHC or Harness failure. If the speedometer has power but no signal, the problem lies in the wiring, speedometer or sensor and not the EHC.

The sensor is on the top right rear side of the trani. Pull it and make sure it is clean.

Troubleshooting time. You may have a short or the beginnings of a short under your tank. Being an 04 your EHC may be failing. Have you had the recall done for the EHC, for that matter have you had all your recalls taken care of:

And as chopper jeff stated above you may need to take your speedo out and check the wiring to the annciator board and the speedo. The wires in that system are renowned for breaking off their contacts due to the moisture that is allowed into the housing.

So there's not even any power going to the speedo, eh?

May be a good thing as that may be easier to trace down instead of a speed sensor signal. I don't know how the '04 Chopper is wired, but on my '05 Chopper, there's a small 3 pin connector under the tank, and of course the big ass one that goes into the EHC. I would just yank apart the connector that's closest to the speedo, and check the voltage and ground. If it looks good there, then get the speedo apart and check the connections to the little circuit board in there. Of course, also check for any worn wires under the tank that may have shorted the power to ground.
