Sissy Bar

I am looking to get a Sissy bar for my 2007 K9 - thinking the 18 inch makes the most sense - its sole purpose will be to attach a bag. Any thoughts on what size makes the most sense for this use and do any of you have a favorite bag for a day to 2 day trip? Also - I underestimated the cost - looks like they run approximately $650 - ouch:eek:

Normally I would have called Vicki to get one - where do you guys do your accessories shopping now?

That price is for the bar, PLUS replacement struts - I don't think you need those - just the bar, which should cost about $180. They changed over in late 2006. Here's a pic of the new struts with the mounting holes built in. All you do is take the plug bolt out, and drop the bar in.


You want the 18" bar, not 12" - it will support a bag better, and I think it fits the chopper look better, IMHO. I have all the Big Dog bags, but they're pretty pricey. You can find a lot of less expensive ones - I'm sure you'll get a lot of suggestions on that.

Vickie is still around, and you can PM her. I don't know if she can get official BD parts at the moment. There are others on the forum who can. If you want to come over and check mine out, you are welcome - you know I only live about 5 miles from you.

Agree with P8RIOT on the size and the looks -- 18" on the choppas and 12" on the prostreets. :up:

I run a 12" on mine and the bags are fine. Check out "T-bags" -- most places carry them. I've been happy with what the do and they are way cheaper than BDM.

Raywood has loads of time on a over-loaded choppa, he'll have some good bag experience. :lol:

I've got the short sissy bar, but i hate the thing. they ruin the looks of the bike. old skool bikes look great with sissy bars but not the customs. i also have the lugggage rack and carry the large bag with no problem.
both sizes work ok with the rack.

I can see on this pic that you have the new struts - you can see the "bump" just ahead of the rear lights. Also, all the chromed struts have the sissy bar plugs - so you just need to buy the bar.

P8RIOT, Dad and I have chromed ones but don't have the receivers for the sissy bars. we got them Oct 14 of 06. really ticked us off to find out right after we got them that they went to standard equipment.

Regarding bags - this shows the largest Big Dog bag. It has a zipper that allows you to keep it small or expand it to double the size - this pic shows it zipped up small, with very little stuff in it. It also comes with a tube-shaped roll that mounts on top of it.

You do have to be careful how you mount these things. If you are riding alone, you can have the bag sit on the Pillion Pad, and have another on the back. If you let it rest on the cargo platform, it can eventually settle down onto the rear fender, and then the zipper will chafe a hole into your clearcoat - you can see here that I have it suspended from the top, not resting on the cargo platform. Both ChaCha and I learned that lesson the hard way.

Bummer! I really lucked out on mine - after my order was in, the dealer told me (a) the struts were going to be chrome, and (b) all I needed to pay extra for was the bar itself. I guess I timed that one just right!

MY timing was off. I got a really early 07. It doesn't have the plugged holes for the bar. The later 07's do.

You and me both. Thant being said I had the sissy bar replaced under warrenty because it was not the right diameter and kept breaking bolts. Have not broke a bolt since the replacement!!!

you can piece the sissy bar kit together cheaper then you can buy it also.

i bought the new 07 struts chromed for $350 right from bigdog and then its less then $200 for the bar itself.

thats only about $500 -550.

I ordered mine in November of 2006, but it was delivered in late March of 2007 - they had a backlog then for custom orders. Somewhere in there the transition happened for the struts. Meanwhile, there were probably still hundreds of them in the distribition pipeline with the old struts.

Ha ha ha, I use the T-bag Baja that is expandable. Works great but it faded fast. Need to re-dye it so it looks black again!! :D

Thanks for the help everyone!!! I am going stir crazy not being able to ride - The sissy bar is the next thing on my list so I will likely order one this week - 18 inch with a Big Dog bag.
