shifting to Neutral

Ok, so I haven't had a street bike before I bought the dog. I did ride dirt bikes for about 10 years though so I am not totally illiterate with bikes. Question: The Mastiff '07 gears (and I imagine all the bikes are the same) is one down, then neutral and then five up. FYI, I have to adjust my clutch a little since it wants to move a bit while I got the clutch pulled in, but anyway, I can only shift into neutral if I turn the bike off -- and then turn the key back to On.
Is the shifting supposed to work that way?? It's like everytime I pull up to a stoplight I have to hold the clutch in -- can't put into neutral. Sorry for the stupid question but it just seems odd that I can't get into neutral unless I first turn off the bike. Thanx for your input.

Steve,

Try to put into neutral as you are rolling to redlight and also if you increase rpm's a little it should go in. I believe you do need to make a clutch adjustment if it is trying to move with the clutch lever fully depressed.

I have a hard time myself with neutral. Definitely different on this bike than my other (sport bike). I have to rev it a little while gently tapping into neutral. It took a little bit to get used to but the more you do it easier it gets.

Yep, adj the clutch; follow directions in the How-To's...if the prob returns in short order check the clutch hub nut. Check out the search feature of the forum - sometimes pretty helpful...

Rather have good adj versus rev or getting used to it personally...

I have the same problem. I haft to kill the bike to go into neautral. My clutch is adjusted perfectly. I even have a brand new tranny. Part of life, I guess.

Hold the RPMs at 1500-2000 and it should go right in. It's easier to go all the way down to first, then tap it up into neutral, rather than trying to tap it down to neutral from 2nd gear.

I have the same thing, but i figured just needs some adjustment,it doesnt bother me. I dont go to neutral unless im parking. I keep the clutch in and one eye in the mirror for the traffic approaching me. Damn some people slow down way too late and way too fast... :2thumbs:

if anyone has to kill the bike to get it in neutral something is wrong with your bike. As the boys have said a quick zip on the gas whilst shifting or shifting whilst the bike is still rolling should do it if you can't get it with the clutch adjustment.

Steve,

No stupid questions here Brother. I found with my Mastiff I still had a difficult time getting it to slip into neutral even after the clutch was adjusted. I switched to Motul 100% synthetic gear oil.... Problem solved! This is a very expensive product, however it works very, very well.

This works for me as well. I almost always go to 1st as I roll to a light then pop it into neutral. Goes in easily. If I'm stopped already I go into 1st give it a little rev and it goes right in.

I wanted to let everyone know the outcome of the problem shifting into neutral. First, I adjusted the cable -- that took care of problem with the cycle wanting to move with the clutch in. It did not help with it getting into neutral (with the motor running). I did try revving to 2k before dropping into neutral and it works fine. Drove for a couple of hours and am used to it. Guess I'll stick with that until I get into adjusting the clutch plate -- see if that doesn't help. Later...

Remember try the cheap fixes first. Mine was difficult to get into neutral, and dragged AFTER getting the service work done, two times now. Both times I drained the primary fluid, and found more than a quart. It makes the clutch run in too much oil, and drag if the fluid level is too high.
Tried Red line and another synthetic, and both worked great with the right amount in the primary.
