Shift peg question

I was wondering about this maybe Dogvet will know. I changed my foot pegs from metal ones to the Kuryakyn switchblade flame pegs and I am having a hard time getting my boot under the shift lever now. Would it be possible to shorten the shift linkage like an inch to bring the shift peg up and back a little so my boot would fit under it easier? Would the slight change in the linkage angle affect the ability to shift?

The way the BDM linkage is beveled, you could run into trouble shortening it and then tapping it out for the heim joint. May need to run a shorter linkage.

Wait, couldn't you just pull the shift arm off the tranny shaft and move it back (right as you're looking at it) a few teeth? This would move the pedal the same way. I know this is how you adjust street bikes....I'm sure it's a BITCH to get to though...

Yeah ...that was the easy way to do it on my 02 Meanie. Swapped pegs three times. But that was exposed so it was a 30 second deal there.

Hadnt considered that option Pro have to take a closer look at the linkage setup.

Nelson sent you a PM bout something else as well.

you could also screw your heim joints in a bit although not sure that would give you enough

Heim joints are pscrewed in as far as they can go now Lee. Had them replaced at Myrtle Beach when they froze up on me. I'll check my trans linkage and if thats to much trouble I'll probably see about ordering a shorter linkage from Nelson

Well I looked at the linkage setup on the dog and I cant shorten the shift linkage nor can you rotate the trans linkage because the way the shifter assembly is made there is a stop point which the lever cant go beyond on the upstroke and the way it is currently setup it stops within 1/4 inch already. Unless Dogvet chimes in with a solution I guess I will have to figure something else out or change my style of boot. :bang:

Don't forget to shoot me over the current length on the linkage rod, as well as your "eye to eye" on the heim joints. We'll figure it out :2thumbs:

Nelson on the shift peg assembly the back is notched out where the shift peg attaches in back. This means that the peg can only move back to the point it hits this notch. If I shorten the shift linkage I will not be able to shift the bike since the peg will not move beyond the notch. Another poorly designed setup in my mind since it makes it impossible to adjust the shift peg to accomodate a steel toe boot with the forward control extensions. It wasnt a problem with the round metal flame BD pegs but it definitely is with the aftermarket flatter Kury pegs.

Gimme a call when you have a couple of minutes to talk Ed. I have Zombie Pegs with 2.5 FC on my chopper and its working. I bet we can figure something out.

Your screwed, break out the loafers, change out the entire forward control set-up, or put the OE pegs on. BDM didn't allow for any adjustment of the shifter or brake pedal positions.:loony: :loony: :loony: :loony:

Alright, feel free to flame the noob, but. I thought I noticed when I helped install my foward controls that you could adjust the shifter position before you tightened everything up?

If you look at the shifter on the frame side of the forward control, you'll see three little allen screws, they attach the shift arm to the shift lever. There are three tabs on the shift lever that these three screws go into. the control body has three slots that these tabs fit through which control the range of motion of the lever.

I'm sure that a machinist could modify the assembly to have more variability in the lever position, but I don't see and easy way to modify the set up.

I have a few spare bdm linkages in the garage if you want to post up your length...

Thanks Dog I kind of figured that. I guess the steel toe boots will have to go and I'll have to ride with my regular boots instead. Like I said you cant shorten the shift linkage due to the notch in the peg assembly. It sucks being 6'4" with size 12 boots but then again not many people mess with you either  If I come up with a solution I'll let you guys know,
