Service yourself versus shop service

Unfortunately I've never had the opportunity to be shown a lot about mechanics growing up.
But i've always been willing to give anything a try.

I can't tell you how much this Forum has taught me!
The people here have taught me to adjust my carb, service my bike, and many other things!:D
And anytime i've had problems, there has always been someone with wisdom to guide me through it.

So basically, I say do-it-yourself!!
And if you run into problems, you will most like find someone here to help you with it.
And worse case scenario, you have end up taking it into a shop to complete a job, but not til after you LEARNED from your experience!

Good Luck

I don't even need to read the replies to know what everyone said. This forum is all about doing things for yourself.

Like all others have said, do it yourself. I'm like Scuba, haven't come across a shop I trust or want working on my bike.

I'm sure there are good shops out there but my experience is they either don't do the work correctly or want to find all kinds of issues and over-charge / over-fix things that are OK (it's gotten worse with the economy and the demise of Big Dog's warranty / Big Dog paying their bills).

As others have said, get you a Big Dog manual & an S&S manual. With the manuals & this site, you can cover just about anything.

I wish I had more money.
Do it yourself and get to know the bike. You won't regret it. Start off with the fluids and stuff like that and soon you may be changing out your levers, bars, pegs, and or grips. Like the others have said. You will save tons of time and money. Get in there get your damn hands dirty and have fun man!

I was right there with you man. Took a lot of tips from here and got really intimate with my ride. Like any other relationship, it can be love/hate at times. But when you're on it, all the hate goes away fast! Just gettin to know your bike.
