S&S Rebuild

As I search for a K9, one thing comes to mind immediately. Mileage.

How many miles would I expect to get on say an average, well maintained, S&S motor before it is going to need either a top end or completed rebuild?

I don't know on average, but, I worked with a guy in ABQ New Mexico that rode a 02 Mastiff that had a little over 121,000 miles on it. He had done 2 top ends. I was just amazed that he had that many miles on the scotter. It was a one owner bike.

I can't answer that one but Raywood has well over 100k on his bike..... still running strong. I had base gaskets put in and they said I still had nice crosshatching on the cylinders at 20k so I think its gonna be good for a few more miles..... You maintain them and they'll run strong for a LONG time. But with anything mechanical its gonna break eventually. Buy one and ride the hell outta it till it breaks and then come back an we'll help ya fix it!!!

It depends on your riding style and how you maintain your bike... my only recommendation is to stay away from the TP top ends on 2005 & 2006 117"ci motors.

I second Five-five,
Mine came with tp rocker boxes and wiped out the exhaust valve guides and bent one exhaust valve with less than 9000 miles.
Everything is S&S now even ditched the comp cam for the S&S 600 and at 13000 miles still running strong!
And most importantly, no more f*#%ing ticking!

Ok, now you all have me asking why stay away from the TP top ends? I guess I could do a search? Hmmmmm......... Then again, additional personal insight is great too!

In mostly 05 and 06 big Dog built some of the motors and instead of using a S&S top end/rocker boxes, The used TP (Total Performance) boxes, seems that there was some mis-alignment on some of the bikes causing valve guide wear and or damage. Also that being said there are bikes out there with over 50,000 on this set up. 05 was the first year with this and the heads had smaller valves, intake restricktors (sp) and the smaller E carb. This was done due to looming EPA requirments it also had a Comp Cams cam shaft as well. 06 had the same top end set up but I believe they then switched to the larger G carb. So you had a S&S motor with a few other manufactuers parts.

I believe 07 was a full on S&S engine just detuned for EPA. I know the 08's were.
