Running lights & tach staying on with key off

Friday night was running 125 down the freeway with my friend. Got to the bar and my running lights and tach are staying on. Rode it the rest of the weekend, just unhooked the lights wire from the battery when I stopped.
With key on, all lights, blinkers and tack are working fine. I have checked for a burnt or bad wire. Can't find one. My friend said his Harley was doing it once and it was a bad ignition switch. Also, twice I've gone to start it and have seen a spark and smoke come from under me somewhere. I've tried starting it a bunch of times but it hasn't done it again. Bad ground somewhere? Any ideas? Thanks

lose wire connections?? check all connection for being clean & tight.. check main ground wire on starter to.. cant figure why the lights would stay on except 1 thing.. the ehc is a microprocessor.. the lighting curicut is staying closed .. wont open the curcuit.. try disconnecting everything from the battery.. then wait a min & reconnect.. have you checked your head light plug? is it the 1 that melts? o6 had some issues with this.. possible shorting the ehc out.. I'd find out what going on before riding maybe it wont kill the ehc.. & dilectric greese your connectons & ehc main harness connections..

Okay, been playin with the wires all taped up and going into the little black box right of the battery. Now I don't have any running lights or tach, with bike running or not. With bike running have headlight and blinkers and brakes. I melted the headlight plug a few months ago, but don't think I melted it again because both beams are working.

I'd check the ehc conection screws.... & use dielectric greese. it may have damaged the ehc when the headlight plug melted... did the terminals short out when it melted? is the ehc giving any codes? do a search there are different colored lights for different functions.. it may have a fault code showing..

By EHC, I take it you are talking about the silver box with all the lightsflashing when it is running. No the headlight plug is okay now. I checked it. It melted months ago and I have never had any problems then or since. Just the bulbs blew out at that time.
I will have to read up on this EHC. all the lights flash when its running, but nothing lights up when you turn the key on. SHould it? Is that how you get a code?

yep thats the ehc.. electronic harness control.. I'll have to look & see I got all the codes for a 07,but not a 06.. the newer 1s are a gold box with black potting,, your should be a silver box with clear potting... there should be a light come on when you turn the key on... not all flashing when running.. now there is a smaller box the flashes when running thats the ingintion box.. the light flash faster as rpm increases.. I'll see if I can find the ehc codes for a 06...

here is a pict.. I think your is the 1st one shown...

I've got a 06 mastiff that I can go check.. but I'm headed out to work... I have a newer gold ehc that gettin ready to go in the 06.. I've got more info on the 07 that in my pitbull I'm keeping the silver ehc that comes out of the 06 for a back up till I change the bikes wiring... shoot me a contact # & when I get to where I can look @ the 06 I can call you & we can discuss your functon lights..

My buddy has an 07. I will see what his does. I have one silver box mounted on its side with lights going acrossed the top of it. They flash with the RPMS. I have two black boxes between the battery and it that all the wiring goes into. The box closest to the EHC...all the wires are taped up going into it, so look like someone has worked on this.
Also, on the face of the silver box looks like something used to plug into it, round and maybe 5 prong or so. Nothing there now.

that round plug is for the dealer to down load info to the bike.. I think your seeing the flashing lights on the ingintion box.. that should flash as rpm increases.. the ehc is a seperate box alot of wires go into it.. this controls all of your electrical functions.. thay have issues of failure... a 07 should have a gold colored box.. the newer ehc ,which is different lights.. so thay probbly wont be the same.. if you need more help with it I can view my 06 mastiff,, as it still has the silver ehc in it.. I know a red light lights up when the key is turned on... my 07 is different.. gotta head to work.. I'll check back later..

You need to find the cause for this if possible. It sounds like the cause.

Rode it 200 miles yesterday, Hey, it was too nice! lol Okay, going to take the battery out now and start checking, cleaning, tightening the EHC. Yesterday I rode with another 06 K9. When I checked his EHC....when you turn his key on a yellow light comes on. Mine does to. When we started his, 4 or 5 lights would keep one at a time flashing kind of like the ignitiion box but not as fast. When I start mine the yellow light and a red light just stay on. Right now I have headlight, brake lights and blinkers. I take it there aren't any fuses on this bike?

the ehc your have & the 1 your friend has may or may not be the same.. depends if its ever been swaped out.. & also depends on when in the yr the 06 is.. the gold ehc has more lights.. the silver has less.. & no fuses unless the curciut breaker was changed to a main fuse.. if it has been smoking I wouldnt ride it till I found the problem.. some 06 bikes had voltage regulator issues some cought on fire.. but a v/r wont cause your issues..

Thanks for the pic of the EHC. I didn't see it until just now for some reason. Yes, I think it is the first one too. Yesterday, I cleaned the EHC (silver) and tightened everything. Took the tank off and checked the wiring there. I will look tonight and see what the red light is that comes on after I start it. It is close to the Power on yellow light, so bet it is probably going to be the Ingnition fault light.
