Rivera Starter Ring Design Change Warning

Something I recently learned while replacing a clutch basket on a Brute IV from Primo-Rivera is that a design change happened sometime around 2010. As shown in the pic below, the bolts that attach the starter ring to the clutch basket are recessed just below the starter ring when on correctly.

This is still true for the newer starter ring, but they change to a different bolt as shown in the picture. Needless to say the new bolt will NOT work in the old design starter ring. The size and thread pitch are identical, but the original (old) design bolt was something specialized and had a slightly smaller head...and the recessed holes on the starter wring were sized for that bolt only.

So be sure to ask for the right bolt! Or just order a new starter ring as they come with the correct new bolts and it's sized for that.

I can see why they changed the design. The old bolt worked, but it used a smaller socket than the normal 1/4" bolt. They bust pretty easy when you have to take off the starter ring--which in a perfect world you never have to do! I had to put the basket on the drill press to drill out 4 of the 6 bolts. I'm hoping to never have to touch that starter ring again!
