can't swear to it's accuracy, but the '07 manual shows (2) bolts from the back side but it also says the gear is held in place by a retaining ring, which you would have to access from inside the primary unless the hole in the inner primary is large enough for the gear to come through, which wouldn't make a lot of sense. pg 6-1 primary case assembly/ pg 8-17 starter motor "The new starter uses a drive gear mounted on the end of the starter output shaft and held in place with a retaining ring."

Removed the exhausts, the pulley cover, the covers, and took the two bolts from the back side. The starter gear came thru the inner primary hole.

my 2006 K9 starter just have to remove battery covers (2), wires on starter and two bolts that go from outside of starter into back of primary cover and starter can be lifted out, do not no if yours is same.

good to know, blacktopper. thanks for the info. i guess logic doesn't play a part in the manufacturing process. seems like they would make the hole just larger than the shaft for less chance of leakage.

thanks again.

Exhaust, pulley cover, and I needed to loosen my battery box just a little to lift it out. NO PRIMARY unless you have a sheared off gear laying in there like I did! :2thumbs:

Well looks like the karata has to come off. This is turning into a big job
When working with the Karata open primary - there are only two bolts that hold the starter, and you do not have to take off the primary plate. YES you will have to remove both battery covers, exhaust and pulley cover to get the starter out.
