Removing compression release

Energy One
Need help removing the compression releases! The S&S manual uses a special tool to remove them from the heads. Anyone remove them without this tool? I am going back to work but will be checking in. Thanks

The tool is a two piece if your frame is close to the engine. It also has a hole to protect the wires when removing/installing. Here is a link of what it looks like. 601711: S&S Compression Release Socket Kit.

Cheapest I saw was $90. on ebay. I like to make all my specialty tools. For that price I'm sure I will try something. Id try to find the socket size in a deepwell and blow a hole in it with a torch on the side for the wire to go thru. Might get a cheapo at harbor freight that would work

If its the rear cyl a one pc socket (even if home made) will not clear the frame and fit into the hole. Best thing to do is find or borrow the tool. Remove the rocker box cover to gain more room and prevent scratching the chrome. Take your time and do it right.

Been there V.

Are you going to replace them? If not, anything can be removed! Just cut off the wires and put a socket on there to remove them. Just be advised, this advice is coming from a person who started to remove the BD head light and when the chrome started separating from the bottom mount, I just grabbed it with both hands and ripped it off. Then I put an easy to mount and remove Adjure Headlight.

A picture is worth a thousand words. There was no way I was going to deal with this hard to remove head light and fix the chrome which came loose when tapping the retainer ring off with no success.

All,
like the ideas, I will try to see if I can borrow the tool from chris at ghetto choppers tomorrow may bring a case of beer to trade until I get them removed. I thougt about cutting the wires as that is very optional. the top part of the rear is removed last thing holding it together is the wire...

That's about how my stock bucket looked like after it cracked...:D

Yeah, once the chrome started separating from the bucket, I used the quick removal instruction.

I wonder if I could put it on ebay as low mileage and minor damage! - NOT:roll::roll:

I'll keep it around as an ornament. The headlamp, light bulb and plug are still good. The headlamp is kindof hazy though.

Nuked the crap out of that headlamp bucket I did.:roll::roll:

I should have consulted Sven on the removal. OK, maybe not.:roll:
