Removed tank for wire shrink wrap

At the suggestion of many I pulled off my tank to do the shrink wrap thing Gas posted. I had the fuel line off anyway to remove the carb see prior post. Found more stuff thats needs to be addressed. My k-9 will be two years old on 4/1/08, keep that in mind when viewing.

Check out the dirt in this cup!

I think my set up is a little different then the choppers. See tank upper bracket below.

Got the tankoff and found this.

The next pic is of the bottom of the tank where the rubber mount slids into, to hold the bottom (end near the seat). Sorry fuzzy pic.

This rubber mount and the rubber grommets were really soft. The bolt would have pushed through any time. They were really gummy.

See wiring harness and wear below.

Now on to the fun. I drained the fuel and removed the petcock. Now I know where all the grit in the bowl came from.

I am surprised it actually ran with all the dirt and rust in the tank. I am in the market for an in-line fuel filter and I would suggest one to everybody. PLease send me links for those of you that have already installed one. I looked in the tank adn I saw the green slime they use to coat the tank, but I could see more grit as well as rust up by the neck. Didnt have time to do a full deep light inspection had to go to church with the family. Also I don't have a photo, but I noticed the aluminum ring that the gas cap screws into ( can't remember the name) is not flat on the tank. One side touches the tank but the other sticks up like an 1/8".

Suggestions, comments ???

Nice post Rick. Makes the point that everyone needs to look @ the screen and check the tank mounts once and awhile!

Rick, another great post. I actually pull mine apart like that every couple months and clean it out real well.
Before you put it all back together pull your float bowl and clean it out real good. Then ensure the little slit in your bowl pick up tube is clear as well as the jets.
Seems every couple months I pull my jets and can hardly see light through them.

All this maintenance you are doing will ensure some long rides this summer with out problems especially after you seal the electrical system.

Later,
Ray

You are supposed to check it at every service interval. Let me guess you paid a shop to do it. Guess what? It didn't get done. You have 2 years worth of crap from the gas and break in debris. As the old saying goes. If you want it done right you have to do it yourself. Clean everything out really well and go for it. I better check mine!

On the dirt... I posted about this a while ago on the other site and brought that post here... get a Pingle Fuel Filter Its crazy to think they don't run one anyway...

There is also a the old school filter that Al is running.

On the tank mount... looks like you need a new rubber thing. That is just a difference in tank mounts.

Here's a pic of mine installed. Nice feature of mine is that you don't need any tools to remove and clean it, just loosen the knurled screw, pull the filter, clean it and put back in.

Al, that's a great looking set-up, any recommendations where to pick one up??

Chop I hate to say it but I think you will find rust in your tank. I am picking up a bore scope to do the same thing. I think when they sealed mine they didnt fully cover the entire tank witht he green stuff. I already see rust in the neck. Let us know what you find I will do the same. I am hoping it's a warranty issue so they can fix my lankmark problem as well.

Ok I really liked the old School Al is running figured that was the route I would go. Pulled up the price Old School chrome $137.00, Pingle $30 bucks. Guess the decision has been made for me.

Gas I checked out your Pingle thread where did you plug in the Pingle? It's hard to tell by the close up's. Your fuel line routing may be different then mine. Mine comes out the petcock straight down, runs between the heads and back up to the inlet on the carb. I figured I would put the Pingle in line a few inches down from the petcock.

Rick mine runs the same way... between the heads. I spliced it in between the heads and kinda hidden behind the stock coil cover a bit.

Al... what's the guts of that one look like? Got a pic of it?

Yeah beyond the good price... my Pingle is a Pingle... they don't ever make anything junk.

Nope sorry, basically has a white/nylon? type filter with an rubber oring on the top. Once you loosen the knurked screw whatever fuel is in the resevoir will come out and you just pull the filter out, clean it and push back in and replace knurled knob.
