Red hot pipes

Here's my dilema, replaced my mean mothers with a new set due to age. my old ones had no baffles the new ones I left the baffles in. Changed my oil lines also and primed them. I have a Dual Runner intake with jets in sizes 32/78. I let the bike warm up and everything seems to sound good. After warming up and driving around the block a few time's I pulled in the garage and noticed my pipes were glowing red at the cylinders. After shutting it down I heard like a suction sound and a small pop with what looked like a flame comming out of the pipe or pipes. I also changed plugs after that and gapped the new one's to .040. The plugs I took out were very black. pictures attached. Any help woul be great.
Thanks for all of your help,
Cliff

Did you mess with the A/F screw? If so open it back up

if You're Running Extremely Rich, Looks Like You Are, The fuel Can Build Up And Start ReIgniting As It Leaves The Exhaust POrt Causin The Pipe To Overheat.

Ray, I did not do any carb adjustments, I will set them to S&S standard set up when I get home today.
Thanks to all for any help,

I've had mine get red hot before changing pipes it was due to a lean condition at idle with the A/F screw. This is the idle circuit and not your jets. A dyno tune will tell you if your running rich on the jets. You can view this in the dyno section. You want to be at a 13.8/1 air/ fuel ratio. I will say most people on here over jet their bikes.

Looking forward to retirement
Raywood the answer to that is "HELL YES" I will always run a little rich! Lean just destroys motors!

Cliff, stick with Raywood and Kaptain on this. You might have accidentally bumped something in the process. Every bike is different on its needs even with the exact same setup. Start back at square one on the carb settings and then have it dyno tuned to show you your A/F ratio. That will let you know adjustments on the intermediate/main jets.

If you don't have access to a dyno, can you use an a/f meter? I've used them on a couple street car motors with good tuning results.

Sure. But a dyno ensures your motor is at its most efficient power band. Some on here are running 34-36 intermediate jets and 80-84 main jets. That's ridiculous!!! (On a stock motor)
I run 29.5/72 in mine at the proper A/F mixture.

As for the original poster on this thread who posted a picture of fouled plugs. It could be bad carb adj to over use of enrichener to week ignition

Hey all, thanks for the input and tips. Messed around a little last night and got most of the redness gone. I never use the enrichner. I'm going to hunt for a good Dyno tuner in the area for a piece of mind. Just have to find one in northern Illinois. Anyone know of one? Ray, hope your enjoing Florida, thanks for the info over the phone Friday. I ordered the Oil pressure guage from you guys.

Franco, I believe I just put all three adjustments to stock S&S settings. I'm waiting on my Oil pressure guage to be delivered because my oil light comes on after a few minutes. Although yesterday the light stayed off with the bike in the upright position. When it comes I'm going to do more adjustments and then have it Dynoed.

Ok, I seemed to have got rid of my glowing pipes. I set the carb to specs and fine tuned it to S&S instructions. I will have to wait till it gets warmer to know for sure. I rode quite a bit on Sunday and pulled it in the garage and closed the door, shut bike off and checked the pipes, all good. It was only 50 out. Also had what seemed like alot more decel pop. I'm in the process of trying to find a trusted Dyno tester in northern Illinois to get it dialed in correctly. Thanks to everyone who chimed in with some helping suggestions.

Mine just turned out to be a bad a/f setting and that loose plug. My pipes were GLOWING bright red after just a few min of running. A minor adjustment on the A/F mix and cleaning of the plugs and I have put another 4k miles on with no problems!!
