REAR CYLINDER HEAD REMOVAL

Well yesterday went out for a ride since the weather was so nice here. In the process of riding the rear cylinder head gasket blew out. Now I am in the process of taking it apart. My question is can I just take the two allen head bolts out of that side of the head and leave the carb and manifold on? I'm not sure if the head would be able to come off unless the whole thing is removed first. Any help you can provide would be welcomed. Thanks!

Raywood and I did a how too on this on both our bikes. REPLAY YOUR HEAD BOLTS :cheers:
Cost now but way cheaper in the long run because they have stretched and you won’t know until it blows again

The biggest cause of those base gaskets blowing is not letting your motor warm up before you take off :)

As said the answer would be no. With it all out of the way you will able to do a better job on the cylinder work. Plus most likely you will loose the seal on the front cyl intake and have to redo it anyway.

You guys are right. I took it all off. No use cutting corners. Is it best to replace the 4 stud bolts and head bolts? I surely don't what to do this again. Now I have mcgroom getting me the gasket kit and all. Now any advice on drilling out and retapping the one stud?? Anyway to tell if the other 3 bolts are ok? They look good. Not coming out of the case.

This all happened because of a stripped out bolt. Didn't want to mess with it untill the riding season was over. Lasted all summer. So I guess I'm lucky.

There is a kit for repairing the stripped threads in your lower end its called TIMESERT get the kit with the long inserts comes complete with everything you need. I've done this on a few motors and it works. I did it with the motor still in the bike you just need to mask everything off for chips and debris. I machined a guide bushing to keep the drill perpendicular to the face and I didn't use a drill motor I put the drill bit in a tee handle and drilled it by hand. There is no room for error on this repair so take your time
