Problem starting after XXX instal

Hello all, well I just bolted on my new TAZ carb and now I can't get my bike to start. It turns and turns and then I get a loud backfire along with some flames out of the rear exhaust. Scared the crap out of me! It was a simple bolt-on application as I've done this before with my buddy's 05 ridgeback. he had the same setup...Miami custom exhaust, D&M spike, no engine mods. Ive got fuel when i turn the throttle (pulled the breather off).

What else can it be? :bang:

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

I received my XXX Carb from Bob just 2 weeks ago.

Put it on and I was fine. Just ran out of the box, even with Bob's idle and mixture settings.....

May be a leak (but must be a big one).

I'd look at the simple things first, vents etc: Replacing the carb should be plug and play. Review the instructions if there is any.

I hear ya erldawg..."plug and play". Just dont get it. Everything looks tight? Even if the fuel/mixture was off a bit it would still start right? I did mention earlier that when i twisted the throttle i did see fuel squirt into the carb...Im confused. Its getting gas (as far as I can tell), all hoses/bolts seem tight. ???

If the bike was running before you changed the carb it should run now. Unless of course the new carb is bad in some way.
I have EFI so not all that knowledgeable with carbs.

Any other ideas...this is killing me. Why wont it start? It has to be the carb right? I can't think of anything that i may have done in the process.

Have you pulled the bowl plug just to make sure you are getting a good flow of fuel? Try to start it with the tank on reserve. Ya got enought gas in the tank? Not tryin to be a wise ass but its happened to us all. V

V, thanks for the response.

Once I pull the bowl...how do i tell if it is good flow or bad?

I mean I do get fuel when twisting the throttle.

Sorry if that sounds stupid.

Thanks,
Colby

Just take out the plug on the bottom. Either 9/16" or 5/8" can't remember. Make sure fuel is off when you do it and have a catch pan ready. When you have the plug out turn on the fuel it will flow real well if the needle and float are not stuck. Wouldn't hurt to have a extra pair of hands to do the petcock if ya got someone available.

Might try turning fuel off and try starting, could be loading up and flooding on fuel. Are plugs wet?

When you pulled the Carb, did you mess with the ignition and Coil. I know on mine you have to take that off to get to the Carb bolts. If you did check and make sure you put every wire back where is supposed to go. My 2 pennies. :whoop:

Good point. I remove mine (coil/over) and usually hang it to the front of the engine could a have pulled a wire loose

yeah i did take them both off.

A bit more info here: I had the coil cover, intake, yost spacer powder coated.

everrything looks fine...im getting sparks on the plugs. I pulled the plugs and grounded it to the head and saw sparks emit. Blue towards the rear, red in the middle, yellow to the front. I assume all was put back correctly.

I thought about this too.

Ill have to triple check it...

Could always throw a little fuel directly into your cylinders via spark plug hole. Crank it and see what it does. Sometimes it takes a bit to get new things flowing properly. Seems weird though if you have spark and fuel. Only other thing I can think of would be air. I know some guys have problems with the spike air cleaners, but I wouldn't imagine that would cause it to not fire.
