Primary Inspection Cover

I'm new to the BDM. The service book states that when the Primary Inspection Cover is removed you have to replace the gacket. Is this a true statement if so where is the best place to order replacement gaskets? What is the torque on the 4 bolts? And the last stupid question why is it not a o-ring so that it can be reused several times? I one of the other post I noticed that the 06 had a o-ring. This area needs to be designed so that checking fluid levels are as easy as the oil.

I replaced mine. I think it was around $5.00. Not worth risking a leak. I think someone mentioned just buying a sheet of gasket material and cutting out blanks. Its a pretty simple gasket.

I've had mine off several times and have not had to replace it. It has not leaked it should be ok as long as you dont tear it.:zz2cents:

You can re-use the gasket a couple of times if you don't tear it. I bought a sheet of .032" gasket material and made my own gaskets. The proper torque is 108 in.lbs. (8 ft.lbs) with a criss cross pattern. Do not use loctite. Be very careful not to strip them out.

silver or clear RTV silicone is your friend.

And tightness, while it has now been listed... I just use the german meathod.

They're flat ... depends on the material you use. I'm sure Gas can point you to the good stuff ... but I don't see why you couldn't cut your own.

Of course you're talking about $5-10 bucks in parts to get the BDM version.

There are two different covers that BDM used.

The o-ring is for the vented cover and the flat paper gasket is for the non- vented.

Mine has the o-ring on it and I have had mine on and off about 6 times and never had an issue with a leak.

I've always cut my own from a standard paper gasket roll from the auto store...because the gaskets were impossible to find in 05 when I got my first big dog...I still cut my own because I still have material left...$10 for a 3-4 year supply...plus the tube of ultra grey...not a bad price...
But I usally get a small leak after a few rides...

But you'll find that BDM quit using the vents in the cover and put in button vents on the backside of the inner primary between the motor and the tranny. So the "vented" cover is useless!

If you want to get a new gasket... just go to the parts store and buy a sheet, come home trace out the old one and cut a new one...

This is the vented style cover that the top "vent" gets plugged off with rtv silicone as you can see the silver silicone under the o-ring

The button vent I'm talking about is shown here

and you can see the hole just to the right of the center bolt hole above the adjustor in this pic

You can also run the gasket on the vented style covers if you want.

In case you don't know... the idea in the vented cover was that there is a small hole in the bottom of the square on the outer primary. They would put a sponge in the square. Where my silicone at the top of that square is... there is a channel going UP then across to the right. BDM swore there is no way the oil will go in the hole, soak the sponge, travel UP, then across and leak. NO WAY... GO FUCK YOURSELF it sure did! Just like the engraved recommendation for 1.5 qrts (shown in the first pic), that started to soak starters, so the owners manual still states the real amount of 1 qrt. So in comes a hole and a button vent in the rear with a service bullitin to remove the the sponge and silicone off the channel and holes. Then in 2007 when they used up this POS design they just put a paper gasket over the whole thing and the left side of the cover area is just blank.
