Primary chain tension

ok... so far so good. Now another question ( or 2)with regards to the chain drive. How much slack should there be in the chain ? Should it be tight against the teflon guide or should I be able to lift the chain slightly off the teflon guide?

I took the tensioner off when replacing my final drive belt and I'll be damned if i can recall where it was positioned on the grooves.

2nd question... On the back of the inner primary case i notices the factory had put some sort of silicone sealent on the back of the primary seal where it slides over the tranny shaft. I cleaned it all off and put a bead of RTV Blue on the back of the primary against the tranny. I saw another thread about a guy leaking oil and he was directed to check out the primary seal. Everything looked cool on mine but I put that bead on there anyway.... Is that needed behind there???

Thanks again.

NOt sure about the silicone...

But your slack should be 5/8-7/8" and yes the chain rides against the teflon shoe. You may be able to pick it up off the shoe but don't worry about. Just check the slack on the chain above it.

Gas Man, i resently re-adjusted mine.BigDog dealership said to adjust to 5/8".
they didn't give me a range as you stated. B4 i messed with it, it had about 1 1/8" of slack. i couldn't get it to exactly 5/8". What I could get betweenthe fine adjustment serrations was either 1/2" or 3/4"......i set it to 1/2". My question is, should i go back and re-adjust to 3/4" or will the 1/2" be OK?

you're probably fine. The range come right out of a bdm manual. To do it 100% correctly you are suppose to rotate the chain till you find the tightest spot on the chain and measure that. But who does that really?
