Potential EHC Issue

I have a 2004 chopper and have been having issues with the headlight. After riding for a bit, after stopping and restarting the low beam will not stay on. High beem works and sonetimes if I flip high to low a few times it will go on. I changed the bulb, checked all connection and all looks fine. Checked the voltage regulator and that was good also. I am hoping its not the EHC, but dont know what else it could be. Any suggestions on what it could be?

Had all the EXCAT SAME issues with my bike and POS EHC:(........Heres what you do.....IF YOUR SURE the headlight connector and bulb are ok, remove the gas tank,and find the headlight harness,get a DVOM (Digital Volts Ohm Meter) hook it up the harness,use a piercing lead that will pierce the positive lead for either side, hi or lo beam..........Turn your bike on and watch the voltage:)..........If it is full 12 volts then all of a sudden its gone,its your EHC,and it has lost the driver circuit for the headlight:(......

That's what happened to me............Kept trying to fool myself myself to think it was something else,it wasn't...........EHC took a shit...........Rewired my bike with a EHC RIP KIT from Curtis...................Everything fine now:):cheers:......

Thanks Diesel, I was fooling myself too. Is RIP the way to go, or has anything else come out that might be better and easier?

The EHC RIP KIT is the best Plug in kit there is:).......The replacement controller is built by ThunderHeart and is bullet proof:cheers:.........and the wiring harness that comes with it is pre-wired,color coded,and has the correct JST connectors to plug right into the secondary harness's.........Simply remove EHC, remove gas tank and backbone harness......Install new module and hook up your new harness....plugs right in..........I did mine with a fractured right hand and two broken fingers.......easy kit......Call Curtis from Wild Steed Worx on here,he will hook you up:2thumbs:...........

If it's only the headlight driver, you could simply hard wire it though a switch.

My Story if it helps...

I have a 2004 Big Dog Chopper.
This is how I determined that my EHC was bad.

My "EHC" symptoms are (happened in 2010):
a) months ago Low-Beam started to intermittantly go out; had to use Hi-Beam only; All else was OK.

b) got New Battery and trickle charged every night. Problem went away two months ago.

c) one month ago Low-Beam out again, Hi-Beam only; bike randomly just lost all power to spark plugs while riding; continued to quit electricaly (no spark, but other lights, horn, turn signals OK, but no Hi-or-Lo beams) Let it sit by side of road for ten minutes then could start and ride it home. (I knew no spark by carrying spare spark plug I connected and held to side of cylinder while cranking.) no signs of weak new battery. All else was OK.

d) rode home, checked voltages:
on same New Battery: 13.5 while on charger, 13.1 off charger; 12.5 dip at startup cranking; started engine --running it charges immediately to 14.2 volts, seems OK. But no Headlight at all.

e) Checked Headlight voltages at bulb connecter:
Yellow wire 10.5, White 7.5; with key ON or engine running. (of course checked/swapped bulbs and jumper wired temporarily off battery to be sure all were working ok).

f) Pulled Connecter to Headlight under gas tank and measured same exact voltages as at Headlight connector; Yellow wire 10.5, White 7.5; Checked ignition wire 12.1 volts.

I think this means my EHC is bad --cannot get 12 volts out of the EHC to headlight... other wires out of EHC read 12+ volts...

I can only ride with no headlights for 9 miles or fifteen minutes and bike quits per item c) above.

ONLY Solution at the time 2010: the Wire-Plus-374 unit. Running GREAT SINCE THEN!

As of this date 2015, probably do what "Diesel Dan" suggests...

Man all these EHC post make me sick! 06 K9 with the factory EHC and I cringe and hope it runs everytime I ride it LOL. I know its a timebomb. Wonder sometimes should I change it or just go with until it happens.
