Paint saver comes off...

yesterday while at the gas station to fill up (05 Chopper) I un-twist the gas cap and the paint saver w/rubber gasket came off.

I can un-twist the gas cap from the paint saver, I also see what was blue loc-tite on the paint saver threads.

What special tool is needed or how else can the paint saver be screw back in so as "not" to un-twist back out?
No I don't screw the gas cap down hard just firmly on. :)

Any pics or links is appreciated.

yep, dawgboy is right. clean up the surfaces and apply JBWeld according to instruction. check to make sure the clear-coat is not lifting around the bung.

My clear-coat is lifting. Does this mean I need new paint on the tank?

it means the gas fumes can get under it and cause the paint to let loose. probably is a paint job in your future.

i think i have read about the possibility of trimming the paint back with an X-acto knife if it doesn't extend past the paint saver and the JBWeld would seal it and keep it tight. don't know for sure. use your own judgment.

I would get rid of the Landmark Paint saver if mine came out and the paint wasn't messed up. You will have more options for caps not using the paint saver ring. Otherwise JBweld on the threads and screw it back in. Landmark makes a key that will fit there paint saver, pretty cheap. Check J&P cycles.

I just did that for my friend yesterday. He just got a used 04 pit bull. Both caps screwed out with the saver. Just clean it and jb weld it back in.
On his the caps are swollen and fit way to tight. I greased the threads still too tight.

Where is the best place to get factory style right and left hand caps?

I have to agree with RRRUFF, I am not a big fan of the paint saver. I had several problems with mine. First it leaked from time to time, some times after filling up, there would be a small "dribble" from around the cap. Also during the summer it would swell from the heat and be almost impossible to get off (that maybe why your insert came off with the cap). I believe the insert coming out as a blessing.

I'll tell you what I did.

First I removed the insert (lucky yours came out easily).

Second, because I had some very small paint blemishes around the edge of the bung, I purchased a paint saver ring. This ring is rubber and chrome and goes around the very outside edge of the bung. You can find them at most major retailer like J&P Cycles (I think I bought mine from ebay). This ring covers any blemishes, prevents getting gas on the tank during fill up, and doesn't interfere with any after market gas cap.

Third, I purchased an aftermarket "custom looking" gas cap. The cap looks better, I don't get gas on my tank, and my cap is much easier to get off.

In my opinion removing the insert was one of the best decisions concerning my BDM I have made so far. You will find people who disagree with me, and in the end you have to make your own decision but I don't regret it one bit.

I have some pictures but for some reason they won't upload to the site. If you would like to see the pics let me know.

I get a nasty vibrating tinny sound and when riding, if I push down on the gascap it goes away. Does this mean that the paint saver needs to be tightened? Is there a safe way to tighten this without the tool or something that can double as the tool?

Thanks,
Doug

That could be your cap inside the paintsaver. Does yours "click" and turn if continue to tighten the cap down? I had one that did. Sorta like some cars. I changed it out with a standard cap that turns till it's tight and stops. The device inside the cap that would allow it to click and turn would vibrate the cap loose.

For a tool I just used a piece of flat stock steel. I measured the indents and drilled and put two 1/8" roll pins in to make a tool.
Check to make sure the vent tube didn't break loose. That could be your noise.

Gas cap does click and that vent tube is not loose. Low Down Choppers sells em right? Thanks for the replies...

Low down chop shop does not seem to have gas caps anymore. Where can I find a gascap that will fit an '09 Ridgeback?

what I've done so far is use a buds right hand threaded / vented ratched gas cap.
The rubber gasket underneath goes down and touches the paint and caps starts to rachet making a snug fit.
So far no problems with leaks or paint.
