I just got a BDM dipstick oil temp gauge, not sure how accurate, but at 70 air temp, I never saw the gauge go over 170. Rode for an hour, combination of city and highway, Amsoil 20w-50
You should be getting to 180 if you expect to ever get the water evaporated out - condensation will build as the motor cools. Keeping it under 250 (which is where a volitility test is done for oil) is a good plan. Oil Life pretty much starts going out the door at 280 or so....
I have one of those BDM oil filler temp guages and too not sure how accurate. Summer time hot out around 220-230. Other day about 50 degrees out it was running around 190-200.
