Oil sumping?

Hello to all,
After replacing my Transmission I finally went for a decent ride. The next day I go out to the garage and see about 1 to 2 ounces of oil under the bike. I thought come on not something else wrong with my dog. The next day after cleaning up there was only a few more drops of oil on the ground. Does anyone know where the oil would come from if it was sumping or where to look. I'll try to get under ot today to make sure the lines are ok. Thanks for any help.

Have you checked your other fluids just to make sure they are at the correct levels? Oil can come from a number of places and will always find its way to the lowest point to drip from. You may want to consider placing your bike on a jack after your next ride. That will keep it level and possibly make finding the source of your leak a little easier. Do you see any oil on top of the tranny, along the upper edge of the rocker boxes, down and around the pushrod covers, dripping out the backside of the breather or is it only dripping off the bottom?

A common source of oil leaks on BDM's is the starter. I would check that first.

Hey Brad,the only place I didn't check the breather and I plan on looking deeper into it today after work. I will also check the starter. Would there be engine oil coming from the starter? Brad, also thanks for your help when I had to replace the tranny.

You shouldn't even have to remove anything. Just reach behind the breather and run your finger along the bottom inside of the cover. I've actually heard of folks placing a tampon in the bottom of the breather case under the filter to absorb small amounts of oil. If you're losing a lot of oil via the filter, first, clean or replace your filter. I've also seen where some place a "puke can" to catch the oil. Search puck can. I know i just read a thread on that recently. I think Little Boo Boo replied to a post and put up a pic showing his setup.

What kind of oil is it?

I would also assume since you just touched the trans did you over fill it? Check the overflow tube on the transmission, you just need 20oz in there.



That's why I have different color oil for each hole. I know exactly where it came from to trace it back wards.

Black will be engine unless its fresh, Red/Pink is Transmission and clean clear oil will only be from the primary :up:

If its the starter it would be primary oil

It's no doubt engine oil. I have the three different color oils. Red in primary,almost clear in tranny and the oil is dark brown. Thanks,Cliff.

Ok, I checked where it was coming from and found one of the lines from the oil tank to the engine was 1 full turn loose at the tank. Are those suppose to be pretty tight? Thanks for the help,Cliff.
