Oil pressure question

I've noticed a lot of people having problems where their oil pressure drops once the bike warms up, but mine is just the opposite. My oil pressure light has started to flicker once I start the bike and it continues to do it through the whole warmup and for about 5-10 minutes after I start riding. After that, it goes out and stays out. I let the bike warm up until the rocker boxes are too hot to touch.

It just started doing this once the temps around here started dropping near or below freezing at night. Could this be that the 20w/50 is too viscous for winter or could it be another problem?

The idle setting is good. It'll still show low oil pressure while riding at 2-3K on the tach until the bike gets good and warm

my oil light would flicker and some times stay on after I washed my bike, and or in damp weather mainly cold. so I ended up putting on a gauge to make sure my oil pressure was OK. the light problem ended up being inside the speedo, moisture had caused rust at contacts to oil light. when I was in myrtle beach Jason from big dog knew just what it was and replaced it no charge in about 1/2 hour. I have also had a time when I did not have it plugged onto the oil sending unit good must have moved it when i was washing in that area, just slid the connector on good. hope this helps you, If you have any question let me no.

Bruce your rite on! The best thing to do here is install a mech gauge.Mine reads 50-60 psi cold then drops to 10-15 hot.Remember that you have a high volume oil pump!

Would be rare a cold engine even with wiped out bearing would have a pressure problem. I bet it's an electrical issue. You do need to check it with mechanical gauge before you ride it more.

Don't forget the oil pressure sending unit itself. Make sure the connections are tight or could just be a faulity sending unit. Like it was said above a guage is you best bet.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll check into a gauge tomorrow. Every damned shop in this town is closed on Mondays.

Speaking of electrics. On my 05 the oil light would come on when moisture got into the left hand control even after the switch boards were replaced. Did this in the rain a couple of times. When i wash the bike anything above the tank gets done by hand and a spray cleaner only, no hose rinse near the controls.:hi:

Hmmmm... interestingly enough, my left hand controls got SOAKED a few days ago when it rained and water got in through a hole in my tarp.

Caution on liquid filled gague mounted on tappet screen, i used one & got no oil pressure once the engine got real hot 30 plus min riding, changed to mech gague oil pressure was fine, as far as oil wt i use lucis 50 wt motorcycle racing oil no problem, first fire up @ 30 degrees 45 psi i do let it warm a bit longer before reving, cruising 3k 30 psi hot idel in summer 10 / 12 psi, s&s said great, liquid gague gave me fits, S&S said heat from pipes fucks w/ oil filled gague unless mt on rocker box, mybe i had a fluke...

As for the liquid filled guages...

There are posts on this already. I believe Ray or GasMan 'cracked the code' on this deal with which guage to get.

The first time mine did this the oil light went out when I hit the left blinker switch to make a turn. Go figure.

I'm guessing it must've been moisture in the board or something. I started it up this morning to ride to work and the light never came on at all....not even during warm up and it was 39 degrees when I left for work.
