I have A 2003 Mastiff. I was looking at the service manual and it says it does not recommend synthetic oil. What brand of non synthetic oil is best?

S&S recommends synthetic engine oil such as S&S Premium Synthetic 20W50. However a premium petroleum based engine oil such as S&S Heavy Duty 20W50 or 25W60 is acceptable. S&S recommends using S&S oil, as it has been designed specifically for our engines.

thank you I will get a good V twin Synthetic. I was thinking maybe the older S&S engines used flat tappets and that’s why the service manual states

RevTech 20/50 motor oil is used in all Big Dog motorcycles. RevTech oil is different from other manufacturer’s oil because of its additive package. Companies didn't recommend synthetic oil till they had one to market or made a deal with someone.

S&S went from don't use synthetic to Use Mobil One to use ours.

Harley went from No synthetic till they release theirs (marketed someones) then suddendly Synthetic was OK
I had people told by harley techs syn was no good and could damage the engine, then 3000 miles later say oh no you need to run synthetic oil its better!

As long as an oil meets the specs for the engine is what matters most -- use what you like.

According to my 2003 manual, S&S recommends Revtech 20/50

Check out
Liqui Moly Synthoil Race Tech GT1 10W-60 Motor Oil and add a little zinc. I've been putting it in all the bikes I service for about 3 years.
