Oil Coolers and their caps.

How do I remove the cap on the oil cooler?

I recently bought two new caps to make them match the rest of the bike but how do one replace these without making marks in them?

Here is a picture of them:

They do screw off, however, I do not want to make any marks on neither the old ones or the new ones and just wondered of there was a special way of replacing them. I also like to know if a thread sealant/silikone, or whatever is used to seal them as there is no O-ring there.

You know, doing my homework/research first and then do the job once later.

If there is enough material on the new caps you might consider having a few flats machined on them.

as far as sealing them goes, you could use a few rounds of yellow teflon tape made for use with petroleum products.

I used a rag and a pair of channel locks to get mine off. One of them came off without a scratch and the other one got a few nicks. When I installed my new ones I put a dab of silcone on them and hand tightened them. Been on for several years and no problems.

The caps are just decorative. Behind the caps is a plug with a large flat head grove cut in it. I wouldn't use anything on the cap. Just tighten it good.

If I'm not mistaken they screw off
You will need a good vice with a good set of rubber soft jaws and a good strap wrench
I agree a nice soft rag and a strap wrench should do it. Remember the caps are aluminum so you can polish em afterwards if you get a few rub marks.

Mine are on hand tight and so far have never backed off. Removal could be tricky. Maybe if you can hit softly with 2 hammers against each other, it may loosen the cap. Place one hammer on one side of the cap and the other hammer on the other side and tap against the cover. This may jar the threads enough for the cap to loosen off.

Awesome info, thanks a million. Mickeetwo, your caps are even cooler than mine as they are a perfect match for my grips and pegs...
