OFF THE PORCH UPDATE

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay guys, let me start off by thank all of you who welcomed me and replied to my first post, all of you seem like really decent stand up people that I consider brothers (and sister biker babe).
Now let me tell you about my expierence picking up my long awaited Big Dog purchase. As I posted before I have been planing this purchase for over six years and finally found the bike of my dreams, an 08 K9 EFI with 6000 mi. on it, located in Dodge City, KS, I live in Omaha. We drove 400 miles down to Dodge City and I first saw the bike I was in awe, it was beautiful, I test rode it for about 20 minutes and I must confess that I have never rode such powerful bike, It was love at first ride, I came bake from the test ride with the biggest shit eating grin on my face, unbelieveable! The seller seems like a straight up guy, he explained that he had the Dog serviced by BDM two weeks prior and they performed thier 5000 mile service, oil tranny, primary, plugs, etc. and they put in a brand new battery, he provided me with a copy of the service, great! Made the deal, said our goodbye and will keep in touch.
My next plan was to drive the Dog into Wichita to see a brother of mine and do some weekend riding before heading back to Omaha, the weather was perfect. I stopped to gas her up and on our way we went, after about 70 miles the bike started to surge like she was running out of gas and the gas light came on, so pulled over to check the tank, it was about half full still, so I'm thinking what is going on. When I tried to start the bike again all I got was a click at the starter, hit the compression reliefs and tried agian, nothing, had lights but it wouldn't start. Here I am stuck in no mans land between Dodge City & Wichita, I call the seller and he says wow I naver had a problem with it, he was decent enough to grab his trailer come and get me and trailer into Wichita to my buddies place and then we would get it to BDM Factory/ Service Center in the morning. Got it there first thing in the morning and they tell me that they probably won't even get to look at it for a week! When I asked thier thoughts on the bike they said the battery was low, I explained that they had just installed a new one and provided the document, they said that maybe it was the starter or the alternator and would give me a call, Wil was the tech that I dealt with. I learned that there is about a month left on the factory warrenty and I need to have the warrenty put into my name for 50 bucks but they can't do it today, WTF! So I check it in and head back to Omaha and try to call the service center just to see whats up with the bike and to check if I can transfer the warrenty, no one will answer the phone there, thier message says they are open M-F 9am - 6pm but no answer. So here I sit in Omaha and my new dream bike sits in Wichita at the company. I am so sick by this, all I want is my bike running and home with me! Any thoughts would be greatly appreicated.
Thanks,
Mike

WOW! What a lousy start to owning your dream bike. I don't have any ideas for you but I have read that there are a number of BDB folks in and around your area that might be able to help you more. My sincerest hopes for a simple fix and better treatment from the BD factory. :(

The first thing I would have done is remove the battery and have it load tested. Just because it's new doesn't mean a damn thing.

Still at the puppy doctor?

I'd charge battery then load test it. If ok, check charging system. my 2 cents..

Maybe someone from the factory that knows the bike will read this and get off there ass and get you on the road where you belong.Best advertisment for a bigdog is being seen ON the road not beside it,Good luck...

I had my bike take a shit on me on the side of a mountain in Tennessee. Click click click, lights flash, no start. WTF? Hmmm, couldn’t be the battery, I just bought a new one less then two weeks ago. Had a nice guy stop with a trailer, towed me to auto zone, tossed in a new battery and it fired right up. Strange stuff happens.

By the way, is this the new trend for BDM customer service. I am embarassed for them.

I just wish someone in the service center would answer the phone, I left two messages and no one returned my call, the main office told me they were open. Hopefully someone will answer or at least call me tomorrow!

After umpteen calls there with no answer, finally Wil calls and tells me that he won't be able to even look at until Thurs. or Fri. and then he will get back to me. What else can I do, I am almost 400 miles away right now, my vacation ends tonight, due back at work tomorrow.

Okay gentelmen, if anyone is intrested, here's the update on my bike. Big Dog called me yesterday and told me the problem was my voltage regulator but they didn't have the part in stock but hopefully they will in the next couple of days. Today they called me and said the bike was ready! Great!! But I am still 400 miles away and I want it here asap because I can't take off work till next week, so they hook me up with the company who delivers all of thier bikes, they say they can get it to me Sunday early afternoon, so I set up the delivery. Sunday seems like forever right now even though it's only a couple of day away. Anyway when it gets here I will take some better pics and post them for ya all. Can't wait to get it back on the road!! By the way I love your site guys, I have been reading all week long, there is so much to learn from all of you, thanks!

Tatt22er, Glad to hear that you are getting the bike back up and running and delivered to you on Sunday.

I am also in Omaha and have a 2008 K9.

Lets go ride sometime.

And there is a Big Dog Service Center at Werner Cycle Works off hwy 50 and I-80. So if you have any more issues with the dawg, you can take it there and Tom and the guys will take good care of you.
