Odd noise

[Splitlog]

Ok, Just wandering if anyone has hheard this noise before.
The only way I can explain it is It sounds like a WOODEN TURKEY call
from around the intake...at idle and its very loud. rev the engine and it
goes away...Runs perfect.

Now here is the weird part..this has occured 2 other times...I hardley ever
wash the bike with water but when I do the noise will stop for the season. I use a pressure washer on light setting and then blow it dry with a leaf blower and it will be a few thousand miles before it starts again.

just a very loud SQUAKING noise from around the intake.

That's definately weird, but it sounds like an air leak. Check your intake gasgets and torque to proper settings.

could excess fuel be getting into a vent and making a gurgling sound instead of a squaking sound??? possibly a leaky fuel needle needs to be replaced??? just thinkin'.

No girgle at all.....It is squaking and running perfect. I will just have to wash it with a hose again..

BUMP, I have narrowed it down a lot.....noise is happening more often now...I squeezed the vent hose and the noise stops.. so thinking it was the 1 way valve possible making the noise i took it off and ran some brake cleaner throught it..no change..after a ride at idle the noise started again, i pulled the air cleaner off and the noise was still present..i put my finger of the hole where the vent tube comes in and no more noise.....
now anyone got an idea?

sounds like the check valve might be broken or not sealing correctly i would change the check valve.

That's my guess as well. I was going to mention the vent valve before I reached post #2 until I got beat to it in #11. Good call jm!

I took it off and cleaned it out with brake clean..blew through it and it seemed to function as it should.....

I was told last night at a dealer that does a lot of work on S & S motors "former Vengence dealer" that the "BUTTERFLY" valves on top of head that opens and closes to let pressure out is making the noise and he has heard it a lot...and not that abnormal and not to worry about it..

2nd he had me switch from my "extended" 1" air filter back to the stock K&N size filter to put a little more pressure back into the vent tube and that would make a little quiter or stop it all together..

I did and have not ridden it yet..I will let you all know

Not aware of any reed valves in the upper end valve train.

Would like to see the S&S exploded parts view of that though.

Did it make the noise only upon startup and if you shut the motor down the sound would continue for a few seconds, then upon re start the sound would be gone?

I heard this noise when I went to the Forcewinder air filter. I had never heard it before and I believe it to be the intake valves seating on mine because I can only hear it at idle. never tried to pinch off the vent tube.

Update,
I have now talked to 2 guys that agree on what it is...One guy worked at one time for S & S. he actually built the engine for BRIAN CLOCK in his bagger that broke the
200 mph mark.
He agreed with to former Vengiance dealer...that it it is in the gasket of the rear head...some sort of rubber butterfly typ valve that rubs on itself. does not hurt anything....he was supprised more of us have not had this issue...said it was a common S & S issue...noise only again causes no problems......

I have the same noise at idle when my bike gets hot, not very loud though.

Yes only when very warm..never on start up cold or short drive...at full high temp only

Yea I know what he is talking about but I didn't realize it was a breather valve. I noticed it when putting my top end back together the last two times. I didn't think much of it since I was putting new gaskets in there and just assumed it was intake valve clatter since it started when I had the larger vale springs & valves in. I have been running mine like this for a while with not problems.
