Odd Dog?

I just got back from spending over 2 hours at the Ohio Title Bureau in an effort to get my 2007 K-9 titled here!!!

To make a long story short there was a "problem" with the VIN. When the Title Bureau lady typed the VIN into her computer all it would tell her was that it was no good because it was "out of range" but wouldn't say what that meant. Calls were made, supervisors were talked to, ending up with the Clerk of Courts in downtown Cleveland calling Big Dog to verify that the VIN on the neck of my bike was the actual VIN from the factory!

As it turns out, apparently my bike was a "prototype" and was never intended for public sale! I have an email in to Big Dog to get more information about this bike seeing as how I'm not the one that spoke directly with them...

The last 6 digits of my VIN are 000005. Does anyone have a lower number than that? What are you guys' thoughts on owning a "prototype"? I can think of both positives and negatives but I'm interested in your opinions.

I would like to know why they sold it knowing the VIN was jacked tho.
The VIN isn't "jacked. It apparently didn't make into the national(?) computer system after Big Dog sold it.

Chances are when the bike was first sold to the owner in Arizona (where I got it) they would have had the same trouble. Once the number is in a state's computer it never shows up as a problem as long as the bike is bought and sold in that state. The problem came up now because I was getting it titled here in Ohio...

Gotcha, I wouldnt be scared of it at all, should have the bugs worked out of it by now if it had any to begin with.

I'd want to know what BD was prototyping on the bike.
That's what I hope to find out!

I don't know what changes were made to the K-9 from the '06 model to the '07 but apparently whatever they were, this was the first (or one of the first with a serial number of 000005) to get them...

I think the only difference was in 07...they went back to using S&S rockers...and had diamond cut as a option....
yeah Dennis...curious to hear what you find out...

Well, here's the answer from the kennel...
Dennis, the information you received was not an accurate reflection of
what we told the clerk at the state of OHIO DMV. When we produce a new
model year, the first 6 serial number (01-06) of each model of bike is
retained at the factory until we have confirmed that the build is going
according to the bill of materials and that there are no problems with
the components used on these and subsequent bikes. If there are no
issues with the assembly, these bikes are released for sale to our
dealers after some time period (generally a month or so).
The issue with the inaccurate VIN was with the computer program used by
the state, not with our VIN number or the bike you have.
And there you have it, once again Ohio screws the pooch!!!

And I thought maybe I had found something special... :(

06's had cable clamps on the downtubes, 07's had welded-on guides.
The wheels were different too, every year I think....

Indiana has been known to do that also, I sold a 2006 Sportster couple years ago, gave the guy the title, he re-registered it at the DMV, his title came back " Salvage Title" Needless to say he was a Mad SOB! I assured him I bought it new and was never wrecked or repaired. After a week of research, the lady at the DMV figured out she filed the application as a Salvage Title, her bad :spank: :spank: :bang: They eventually straightened it out.

For what it's worth, my insurance company (progressive) doesn't "accept" my VIN either. However, instead of rejecting it, it corrects it by changing a B to a D. I have notified them of this issue and they are researching it with their software folks as well. It's been over a 2 months now and no response and my insurance card technically does not match my bike. :job:
