Found an electronic copy of the article here: READERS FORUM - News, Sports, Jobs, Community Information - The Times Observer Thanks for the heads-up!
Dear editor:

Motorcyclists beware - NY state troopers on the warpath!

Last year a friend and I went to Canada's Friday The 13th motorcycle rally. As we attempted to cross the Peace Bridge - thing's became not so peaceful. NY state trooper's directed every motorcycle to a parking lot where they performed a NY State Inspection! That's right - if you were licensed in PA - it didn't matter. To quote a trooper..."well your in NY state now"! I was fined $60.00 for non-factory pipes. Mine aren't loud, they have mufflers. The troopers didn't care if they were loud, or, quiet - they didn't even listen to them. Per NY state law - they were not stock! Same goes for helmets, or any other "safety equipment" item - they are all an equipment violation amounting to a $60.00 fine!

I spoke with NY state ABATE officers and they said one of NY State's troopers was killed going 100+ MPH in an SUV following an idiot biker - so now they apparently have reason to have it in for ALL motorcyclists. That, and NY State can use the money.

Another friend was just plucked out of a moving line of traffic in NY, for an "equipment" violation & $60 fine.

Check it out for yourselve's fellow riders - before helping NY State's economy.

When my friend & I said we won't ride in NY State any longer, the trooper said "Wow, NY State is really going to miss the business of two biker's"! Apparently, they are ignorant of the amount of motorcyclists out there now, and, just how much money we spend when traveling/vacationing.

Also, NY State ABATE told me trooper's are "staking out" all rally's so as to capitalize on large number's of motorcyclists. Since last year, I have been thanking PA trooper's at all PA motorcycle rally's for being decent toward motorcyclists.

Ride free friends,

Isn't it kind of odd that the most recent Friday the 13th ride from "last year" as the article says was in June but this guy didn't post anything about it until 9 months later?

Things that make you go Hmmmmm....

Most equipment violations are enforceable only to vehicles registered in the state where the infraction is occurring and the vehicle registered. If your vehicle is in compliance with the rules and regulations of the state where it is legally registered and or licensed there is no violation. That is for "most" equipment violations. States typically reciprocate. For instance are such things as some states require a front and rear license plate while others only require a rear license plate. You cannot summons an out of state vehicle for not having a front plate if the state that it is registered in does not require it. Same goes for inspection. I could go on and on but I won't. As I have found over the years, many officers will just comply with their departments requests.

If one wants to spend the time and money in court or returning to the state that the summons was issued on "most" of these equipment violations they would win. That being said a lot of departments hang their hats on that as it is an inconvenience and often costs more in time off to fight the equipment violation. Most elect to just pay it as there are no points attached to their drivers license.

Yup....Ditto on the NY sucks. Have lived here all my life and things have gone from bad to stupid!:bang: A couple weeks ago our Blind (literally) Governor, David Patterson announced he wanted to add a luxury tax to a haircut. I shit you not! This asshole is off the deep end. With the economy in the tank he is still looking at ways to get deeper into our pockets. He's so blind he can't see the people waving as they leave the state. End of rant:rant: .....Sorry

while at daytona bike week this year my wife was issued a ticket for having a vertically mounted license plate, we asked for a "break" since we are both firefighters. the port orange officer said we were getting a break, he was only writing the fine for $92 instead of the $1,600 that he could! SOOO we paid the 92 via mail , can't go back and try to fight the bullshit fine more than that in gas back.

The trooper that was chasing a crotch rocket did not act in the best interest of the citizens of the Pompey, NY area. Both were traveling at a high rate of speed down Route 91 when he failed to make a corner and hit a tree. I'm sorry that he lost his life and for the family he left behind but in my opinion he acted irresponsibly. This was a no win situation, the kid was charge with negligent homicide and is now in jail, the family lost a father and husband and now there is yet another law on the books. If you run from a law enforcement officer it's now a felony....
Our F*#kin dumb ass Governor is taxing anything and everything from non-diet pop to a round of golf. There is no f*#kin end to it. I had heard he wants to raise the benefits to people on public assistance. Tax and spend these clowns have no freaking clue what hell is going on. Do you think I'm bitter? New York is the worst state in the union period. :bang:
In conclusion sorry Leo's but New York's finest are a brunch of arrogant f^#kin pricks.

I understand Obama's got some fellows down in Guantanamo Bay that need a home. I'm surprised our beloved Governor hasn't invited them to join the ranks of New York's welfare system!

Last summer there was a road block set up near Lake George for Americade. It's was a safety inspection. I believe there was a thread on this last year.

The troopers routinely set up road blocks on the south side of Syracuse on the Rt 81 on ramps in the low income part of town. Personally I feel they're targeting this area and may possibly be borderline profiling.

Never in my life have I lived in a state where road blocks are rountinely set up to police the citizens. UnFu*#ing real....

Guys if you ride through NY check yer poop and make sure u r legal. Our wonderful Governor put a surcharge on the surcharge. I was pulled over and received a prize for not wearing a seat belt --- Fine $50.00 Surcharge $85.00...
