Noticed that a part fell off...

I washed & waxed my bike today and noticed that somewhere between here and there, I lost a lens cap on the rear light. So, I guess the question is how big of a deal is something like this gonna be? Hopefully you can buy just the lens cap as opposed to the entire light assembly. And I am thinking that the lens cap must not be real tightly secured (?). Any of you guys run across this yet? Thanks in adv.

Never had it happen to me on 2 BD's and a lot of miles. I would say it wasn't seated all the way.
A lot of us have gotten the hooded covers that include a new lens from you local HD dealer. If you don't like the hooded covers then pm me your address and I will send you one of my spares. They are slightly yellowed from age but shouldn't be a problem.

Here's a pic of the hooded covers from HD. They match your hooded headlight! I got them with smoked lenses in back and clear up front.

BB;

I changed mine out long time ago. I got an ass load of spare covers. Yours if you want 'em.

I've never had one fall out...though vibration loosened one of the rear housings once (As Thumper pointed out to me on one very rainy ride.) :D

I noticed that they didn't feel real tight when I put the sissy bar on mine, now I have to check more often! :D

I've been told that you can also put a dab of locktite on them to help them stick. However, I will admit I have always believed that you don't want to get loctite on plastic. It screws it up. But Big House did the loctite trick on his visor lenses.

I would swap them out for the HD smoked lens or the hooded covers.
Call Vickey and she will get you a good deal

First of all...

First of all I would like to give a BIG "thank you" to all of you who jumped in with offering the part to me. Talk about an overwhelming response!

I was in the Dealership to have some work done and picked up a lense cap while I was there, so that's the end of this story. I am gonna take a look at the smoked ones at HD, so thanks for that idea also.

Here is a tip! The lens is where the little locking tabs are located and they can slip forward in the chrome housing if you try pushing on the chrome when installed. Push on the actual lens to seat the locking tabs, you can see how much extra will go in to the signal when you do this and it will have a better chance of surviving the bumps and vibration. I thought one of mine was defective or broken on my softail when one kept dropping off. I was pushing on the chrome only though to re-install as fingerprints wipe off chrome pretty easy. I noticed the lens push out as I pushed in so I pushed the center of the lens with my thumb and I heard it click. Problem solved and they never came off again until I pulled them off.

Here's a closup pic showing what Sparks is describing. The lens cover on the left is the one from Harley - on the right is the stock Big Dog lens. Notice how the tabs on the Harley part appear to be shorter - they actually are the same length - it is just that the clear lens portion has slipped down inside the chrome outer shell. Be sure to seat the inner lens part completely, and all is well.

Just for completelness, here is a closup of the new cover snapped into place:

Good job P8RIOT, I remember when I got mine and I didn't think they fit until I discussed it with P8RIOT and he pointed out that you have to push the lens on. :flag:

So the standard HD hooded covers just snap in and replace the BDM stock covers? I just ordered 4 new BDM covers from my dealer. The tabs get brittle and break causing them the fall off and/or leak. I like the hooded ones, may cancel the cover order and just buy the hoods.
