Not turning over issue returns with vengeance!

I went to start my 06 Mastiff for riding season last month & after sitting on the Tender all off season she turned over once then the starter just makes a loud clicking sound like the plunger is bouncing back & forth! The battery is 2 years old now & the same thing happened last year so I took the battery back & had it tested, was told it was good. Got home reinstalled it, left it on Tender overnight & it fired up fine all last season! I left it a couple days after my initial failure to start this season & it didn’t even turn over just the clicking sound. Bikes only got 5,000 miles on her but I guess it could need at starter, kinda what a car starter sounds like when it needs replacing. Gonna check the Batteries CCA’s to be sure I’m good there, according to an earlier post I saw we need around 300 CCA’s. Any ideas?

Sounds like bad battery. Get one with 310 cca try it out. About $100 or so

Try a battery boost pack see if it fires up.

Start simple. Battery may fail under load. As always check connections. Report back when complete.

If you jump it from a vehicle, make sure the vehicle is not running

Mine does the same after pulling it from storage. Got a battery with 320CCA, but then I use cables hooked up to a car batter (car is not running) to get the fluids warmed up again. Once she is running she stays running, but if you still hear a click when the cables are not hooked up then you may have connection issues. If the connections are clean and the battery was tested good, then you may have the same solenoid issue where that connection has warn over time and may need to be replaced. Small connections like that are any easy fix for about $40 but come with more installation time. Best of luck!

After checking all my wires & connections deeming all we’re good I took the battery & had it load tested. So apparently my 2 year old battery was actually 7 years old so it sat on the shelf at Batteries Plus for 5 years before I bought it. Also it was only holding half a charge & putting out 0 CCA’s! New battery & she’s running like a scalded dog again!! Thanks for all the advice!!

Buy a better brand battery. A lot of guys here get a Deka battery. I don't know what kind of maintainer your using but get a good one. I use Pulse-tech and will never use anything else. This is the one I have and it works great. I also have a boat battery that I have to keep maintained. My boat battery was ten years old before I retired it and it still held a full charge. Just my 2 cents.

I got a Deka. You have to watch, alot of batteries have cheap post. Deka and a few others have solid terminals. As for a charger I bought one off Mad Dog. I think it's called Battery Minder Plus. Typical charger, maintaner, and desulfer. Had them for quite a few years now. Still work great.

I agree that Dekas are good batteries, but I think it depends on where you purchase them from. My last two Dekas lasted a little over a year each.

The one I had was a Deka, the age and possibly just a bad one was the issue I guess, 2012 manufacture date that I bought in 2017. Never thought to look at the manufacture date! Lesson learned there! Got another Deka with a 2019 manufacturing date today!

I use a “Battery Tender Plus” brand tender on my bike that’s been wired to my bike so I just plug in the pigtail after she cools down and she stays plugged in pretty much 24/7 if I’m not riding her again the next day. The original Big Dog battery lasted about 10 years the way I’ve been doing it that’s why I was sure it had to be a wiring or starter issue! 2 years for a battery that stays on a tender, never would’ve thought, especially when I had the same issue last year and it test good where I bought it from! Shows how the chain stores work!

I have heard of the pulse type tenders that are supposed to be much better for maintaining a battery! If I have another issue with a battery I think I’ll drop the cash & make the upgrade to a pulse style tender!

Hopefully this Deka battery will last a few years. If not I’m going to give the Braille B2015 & a pulse style tender/maintainer that I’ve read about in a couple different forums here a try. Checked their website, the battery is $210 but if it holds up I believe it’d be worth it! You get what ya pay for ya know!!

If the batteries don’t last, check the charging . cold and warm engine, all rpms . It may be the VR giving too many volts.... VR is cheaper than battery too.
