I have an 08 Mutt. My Beauty ring fell out. Had to unplug the light on the road. Ordered a new headlight. But now I have no power just to the headlight my parking lights work fine
Just it. Not getting power to itDropbox

This Wire Diagram is from an 07 K9 but is probably similar. Only 3 wires to the headlight. High beam, low beam and ground. If you have a meter it should be fairly easy to check out. No need to start the bike just turn the key on and it should get power to the headlight. Check the plug for any obvious damage.
Yes I have melted them before. But this is different. I have no power to the plug. The plug at the headlight gets very hot, and may melt a bit, become loose, and also will corrode. Like Mike said, use a multi meter to determine where you have lost power.
Is your bike stock? Check your EHC for any error lights. Look for an inline fuse someone may have installed. Did the light short out when it broke?Just it. Not getting power to it
No it was still working. I unplugged the EHC. To reset it. The blue light is flashing for bright. I don’t think anyone has put an inline fuse.Is your bike stock? Check your EHC for any error lights. Look for an inline fuse someone may have installed. Did the light short out when it broke?

I really appreciate you sending this to me. It has helped. I know now I have an open circuit hi and low beam. Just don’t know how to close them. There is no reset. I have hooked up the new lamp and still no power. The bike is shutting it off at the handle bar.Dropbox

Your right. I am getting the two fault lights. They coincide with the blue hi beam flashing as well. I hooked the light straight to a battery. It worked fine. And I get I have open faults. I thought they would close on those own with a good light. They didn’tDropbox - Error - Simplify your life

Ok, I got this from Mr. Wright (Major Resource on this site) , It's the 08 Service Manual. Go to chapter 13-1 page 13-13 and read up on the Headlight circuits. Read all about the EHC as well to get a helpful understanding or the EHC fault lights.
Your headlight should default to low beam when you first turn the key on. If your Blue high beam is flashing I would be looking for a fault light on the EHC as well.
You will read that the light is fused through the EHC but will only reset after the fault (open or short) is fixed. If you replaced the whole headlight maybe it's faulty and producing your failure?
You will need a test light or a meter to help you diagnose the problem.
If you don't have the original EHC these instruction don't apply but still may help you troubleshoot. Good luck
I didn’t break. Just came out with the loss of the beauty ring. And yes stock everythingIs your bike stock? Check your EHC for any error lights. Look for an inline fuse someone may have installed. Did the light short out when it broke?
OK seems like your making progress. The EHC won't reset until the circuit that operates the High/Low beam is fixed. It's good you tested the light at the battery but that only tells you the lamp is good. Considering what you have said, my guess would be your problem is with the connector since it probably got pulled on when the light fell apart. Make sure the wires are not pulled back inside, especially the black (ground) wire, and not making proper connection with the lamp.Your right. I am getting the two fault lights. I have been using a meter this whole time. Thing is. You won’t believe what all shuts the power off to just the light. If you put your emergency blinker on. It shuts off. When you start the bike. I am sure I have power to the handle bars. But not the light.OK seems like your making progress. The EHC won't reset until the circuit that operates the High/Low beam is fixed. You may end up checking for continuity back to the EHC. Not as likely but you will need a meter to do that. Do you have one?
I'm not positive , because it's in a fault condition, but if you unplug the light and use a test light connected to ground,to probe for power(with key on) at the yellow(low beam) and white(high beam) wires. If you show power focus on the ground wire.
If you don't have a meter and a test light head down to Harbor Freight and pick them up. Nothing fancy but with a Big Dog or any bike that vibrates, you will definitely get use for them.
Can you be more clear about what you are saying is happening. Are you saying when you hit the Emergency Flashers the head light goes off ?( that would be normal operation when in Flasher Mode) If so are you saying when the bike starts the headlight goes out meaning it did come on before you started the bike? Keep in mind it is normal for the light to come on when the key is turned on and turns off briefly before the bike starts then back on. Are you saying the light just doesn't come back on after the bike starts or that it never comes on at all??I have been using a meter this whole time. Thing is. What I’m saying is according to the manual that it goes off when the engine starts and it also goes off when the flashers are on. But for me mine hasn’t came on yet I’m just saying so many things shirts the headlight off it’s leaving me perplexed on where to begin. Unfortunately I did get frustrated and I did do the ultimate taboo I straight wired it with a toggle switch and now I have a headlight and it burns bright and I just flip a toggle switch and it goes off when I get off the bike until I can figure out whatIn the world is going onCan you be more clear about what you are saying is happening. Read EMERGENCY FLASHERS on page 13-16 for more info. When you a are in Emergency mode Toggle the Run and Off button on the right hand control assembly and see if the headlight comes on. It seems unlikely but maybe your problem is in the control brd.
This is about the time you will start to become frustrated but don't let it happen. At least you can ride during the day until it gets fixed. I'm just looking at this logically and could be totally wrong but double and triple check the headlight connector. That's where this all started.
Hopefully I didn't get too far into the weeds on this.![]()
Ok to troubleshoot your issue you only need to turn the key on which will provide power from the EHC to the headlight. Leave it unplugged and read the voltage to ground on the yellow and then the white wire. What do you get? The ehc will be switching between low and high(because the light is unplugged) so the reading will jump up and down. If you use a test light it will probably blink. If you get nothing try reading from the yellow to the black and then white to black. What I’m saying is according to the manual that it goes off when the engine starts and it also goes off when the flashers are on.
