Hi ya all I just came accross a 2003 pitbull would like some advice on before I lay my money down on it the basic details are as follows:

1. 2003 Pitbull
2. Orange Crush paint W/broken checkerd flag paint scheme
3. Battery Tender
4. 5325 miles
6. Last registered in 2009
7. Chrome Bullet Air Cleaner Kit with Chrome Elbow (Dont know make)
8. Vance and hines pipes
9. No oil leaks
10. Sounds strongs no unusaual noices or popping started right up after 2 trys on the electric start with minimal effort or hesitation.
11. Tires and fork seals do not look dryrotted
12 was bought 2003 brand new seller is the first owner
13 has original owners manual and paperwork

Downfalls
sitting in a non heated shed and needs a good detailing but paint looks like will clean up with a good wash.

Rear break rotor does not have grooves but is not smooth eaither wavy surface if you know what I mean.

Allot of black soot in the exhaust tips

Non polished areas of the jugs are midly oxididated from sitting

Both pipes are blued 6-12 inches down from the heads

The owner replaced the starter with a "stronger" one in 2009 he said the battery keep running down and thats why he put the stronger one on.

Speedometer has a cracked lens and is rusted inside

The high beam indicator is stuck on but both high and low beams work.

So with all that what would anyones best guess for fair price be ?

How available are parts such as spedometers, brakes , rotors, belts etc. ?

Starter does that sound like a reasonable statment?

Are there any known common electrical issues with BDM's ?

I am mechanicly inclined enough and have enough tools to fix most everything , plenty of mechanical experience. just wanna know what I am getting into, and any thoughts from more experience BDM owners.

Thanks in advance Dale

Buy it for a song and learn to dance.According to some in the know on here, some of the older dogs used harley parts. Got any pictures and what does he want. If it has been setting for three years, I would start low as possible.

Well, money is always an issue, but you may want to move up a few years and get a Dog that doesn't have so many issues...unless, as pknowles states, you are a grease monkey and can work on this thing...but it's also expensive to buy new parts piecemeal. Get a price in mind, add the cost of what you plan on replacing and add it up. If it's in the neighborhood of a newer model, you should be able to get a 2006-2007 model somewhere, low miles for around 13-15k. Best of luck with your search.

I wish I had more money.
I would get it. 03 was the last of the good years. If you believe it to be in good mechanical condition you won't be disappointed.

I am not familiar with the pitbull. I have a ridgeback 2004 that was in worst condition than what you stated here when I got it several years back at about this time of the year. I put new brakes on it and rebuilt the caliphers, easy enough. Replaced the speedo because it was full of water where it had been sitting in the weather outside a few months. I had the seat recovered where it was ragged out from getting rained on. I replaced the battery. It had the original still in it. I had to replace the ignition switch cause the guy that had bought it and left it outside had lost the keys. My exmark lawn mower would start it though!( cheap switch!) It was in terrible condition as far as a cleaning up. I spent about 2 months polishing and scrubbing it all over by hand. Mother's mag polish will completely removed your finger prints and make your fingers very sore and black ( billet) use the gloves . It still has some imperfections I refer to as character marks. I have a few scares myself from life treating me rough too.

I have had an absolute great time riding this scooter as it is refered to around here. I have replaced the tires as well this last year and I had to replace the ECH and the cheap switch to 2 way switch, ( lawn mower key won't work in this one) with the wire plus modules. Right now it is down because the switch module , wire plus fried on it a few weeks back.

I have worked on it a little and polished on it a lot and still do. I have no regrets getting it at all. They are great fun to ride and right now I wouldn't trade it even for any other bike out there. All those issues you listed are fixable with a little elbow grease and TLC. The gurus of the big dog universe hang out here and will walk you through any issues you run up on. They walked me through some issues as well.

My wife is a rescue dog fanatic, so when she bought this scooter for me, she was acting in her true self. Just rescueing an old dog that needed some one to take care on it. I kinda promised it and myself I wouldn't ride it in the rain after cleaning it up as good as it came out ( watches weather channel). I have rode it a lot since the winter it came to our house, enjoys every minute of it too, we avoid the rain. Get it and take care of it , it will do you good as well.

Thanks ya all the price is right, for what it is I think about 2 K in parts with breaks and exhaust the 2 things that do scare me is the electrical high beam stuck and the issue with the starter since he had not put plates on it since then, kinda makes me nervouse.

I am considering hittting the bank on Monday. He is asking 9500 for it so with the earlier post of 12K should give me some wiggle room to address the issues without taking a huge beating. Thanks again I'll let you all know if I get it and most likley be hanging out here allot if I do to address those issues. Thanks again

9500 is not a deal for that year in that condition. There are 2003s in great condition going for 9500. You just have to look a little. Offer him 8000

Don't know if you've checked or not but the N.A.D.A. book price for that bike is $8,894 average retail and 6,775 low retail That's what my credit union goes by. I printed off a copy on my computer and took it with me to deal on mine. I would certainly try to get it under the 9500 he's asking. If it's been sitting around uncared for like that I'd say you are in a prime position to "low ball." Nothing wrong with getting the best deal you can. As far as the hi beam switch, from the sounds of it cleaning could solve the issue. Good luck!:flag:

agrees a bit too much at 9500, with issues you are going to have to fix ,,,

you have all the little things on your side to buy it,, this isn't not a great time of the year to sell it either, start at 7000 or 7500 see what the reaction you get as you walk away, and be prepared to walk away, The deal of the century is in your court,,

I just like my Freedom
FWIW....I gave 10k for an 04 Pit. It needed some TLC as well. Talk him down to 8k. Yeah you have to pay to play. Not many toys that dont cost to upkeep. Buy it, hang out here n learn to wrench it yourself and ride the hell outta it..... Welcome to the Pound!!

I'm starting at $6000 and not going over $7000! I just bought an 05 pit bull under 5000 mi. only issues were non visible cosmetic work on dash and battery cover, fixed both. Asking price was $13000. I took my N.A.D.A. print out and walked away with it for 11k. Like Ray said, be ready to walk away and don;t act like you have to have it even if you want it bad. Money talks! especially after sitting as long as it has!

Yeahhhh Orange, you're starting out right with that base color. I agree with the 8 - 9K range or a bit lower if you can.

Kbb

Last night when I looked at kbb I seen 9385 in excellent cond I was thinking 8500. 00 would be my offer

There is such a wide array of prices for these but had not found many pitbulls for sale one was for 12995.00 from a dealer I found on here

You guys are awesome non the less

What does anyone think about the speedo , I only found digital ones for 2004 up so far anyone have any idea how much or where I could find on . This is on a tank consol so changing bezel and all with a different set up could be an issue I was thinking if a stock one is not available

Thanks

Maybe get with Mad Dog and see if he can suggest a speedo. He sells the Dakota Digitals.
