Happy New year!

I have my bike in for the speedo recall and fuse mod....dealer called me back and said that bd says that if you do not replace your battery with a AGM battery that can hold 12.5 volts and have at least 350CCA that you may experience the same issues with new speedo not booting up. Has anyone else heard of this? also they said that exide is the only one who offers this battery that BD reccommends but is only distributed through/for Harley Davidsons. Thanks

No, Have not heard of that and do not see what the CCA would have to do with the speedometer. As far as the 12.5 VDC, all 6 cell batteries of any quality should be able to hold 12.5 and actually typical standard voltage is 13.2 based on 6 cells at 2.6 VDC nominal.

Sounds very suspecious but hell I could learn something new! I will say the standard BDM supplied battery has held up good for me, just keep the battery tender on it.

If the dealer is saying that BD says Exide is the only one that meets the requirement and they are only available through and HD Dealer, would that mean that the ones that are sold through BD Dealers DO NOT.

Is you dealer a full BD Dealer or one of the authorized service center that is just replacing a bad speedometer? Does not make sense to me as written.

I could possibly see a problem if the battery does not have sufficient CCA that would allow the voltage to drop below the minimal for the ROM on the speedometer while cranking. With that said, I would imagine that there is other batteries that will meet or exceed the requirments of sufficient CCA and voltage during the crank cycle beside an Exide at the HD shop.

Granted there may not be many due to size limitation but I would surely imagine that BDM is not going to point a BD owner to HD shop for the only source!

Good luck and let us know what you find out or how it works out.

Interesting for sure. I wonder why the Full BD Dealer just doesn't sale one of the BDM batteries, unless he out of stock. Hell I would think he would want to make the profit in house! Oh well good luck anyway!

Well dog1, I spent 3 years on San Diego and bought both of my Dogs at Coast Choppers. The thing that pissed my off the most was the turn over. They did a complete change out of personel every 6 months.

All of you guys should ask you dealers how long your mechanic has worked with BDM motorcycles cause they go to a "Tech Summit" every year to learn all the ins and outs of our bikes. When your shop has a frequent turnover our mechanics don't get all the training they need.
I'm very happy that up here in the PNW my dealer has had the same mechanic since I've been here and is currently on his way to BDM for this years "Tech Summit".
Lot's of problems with our bikes can be isolated to our wiring system or certain component that newbies won't have a clue about till they call in the tech support line for every little thing causing out bikes to be in the shop for weeks.

Oh yeah, the stock BDM battery that I last got was a 270 CCA. If Coast Choppers is recommending a 350 CCA battery then who is supplying it????

Later,
Ray

after this bike melted two sets of posts and one battery the dealer replace it with a larger amp battery, non-BDM. several of my friends have harley batterys. i've never heard of this issue before.

The interstate AGM battery I bought is 310 CCA and that was one of the highest ones I could find that fit. And like the other said, BDM stock battery is only 270 CCA.
