New battery shorted internally-almost lost the chopper.

No, the main ground comes from the battery to the frame. Once disconnected ALL ground wires are disconnected...
I don't have a ground from battery to frame on either of my bikes.

Starter is still grounded through the bike starter bolt, now that you mention it ground probably isn't that great since its cast and not steel.

Most bikes have both the frame ground and the starter ground. It would be a weak connection if only through the starter.

same thing happened to my 04 it took a life time to disconnect the battery and the wrench was in my back pocket
It seemed like hours, and then all I could think was the battery is going to explode while I'm standing over it. I bet in real time it was about 40 seconds, but seems longer while it's happening.

UPDATE: Bike is now fixed. New battery, new regulator, new 2KW compufire heavy duty starter, and got my S&S carb rebuilt. Only got about 3 more weeks of riding season.

And in case the dog ever goes down again, I have this as a second bike. 1988 FXR with 22K on it for miles.
