Need some help from you motor heads!

2007 K9 – Thought for sure I had a 546 Cam because my bike is an '07 and I have the S&S rocker boxes.

I’ve been thinking about upgrading to the 585

Gave S&S a call this morning and gave them the serial number off my motor. HE00607X

From that, he provided me with the following:

-Invoice date of Nov 13 th , 2006 (Bought my bike in March of ’07 so this makes sense)

-No restrictor plates

-640 springs minus the inner – would be ok for the 600 S&S cam

-Cylinders are running long at 40 thousands over

But……….here is the kicker. I have a 569 Comp Cam, not an S&S 546. Maybe this is known info to some on here, but again, thought I had the 546. Anyway, like I said, been thinking about an upgrade to the 585. However, now I’m wondering if there really is much difference from the 569 to the 585. Can some of you expert motor heads jump in and let me know your thoughts?

The guy at S&S made it sound as if shortening the cylinders and going with the 600 was the way to go. He said that a stock S&S 117 (not built for Bigdog) would have shipped with the 600.

I’m not a mechanic but don’t mind a little wrenching as long as I know I won’t screw something up!

What is my best option?

Does shortening the cylinders change the compression?

Would I notice much difference from a 569 to 585?

What is involved in shortening the cylinders? I know I can’t do it, but what should I expect this to cost?

John Sachs is a well known machinist/mechanic. He's stated in the past that the 600 was probably the best all around cam for the 117. I'm sure that shortening the cylinders will increase compression but someone like john can tell you all you want to know about that modification. Others can as well, but his name sticks out at the moment.

shortening the cylinders to get the pistons flush at top dead center will raise compression plus give a better "quench". it gives a better mix to the air/fuel in the combustion chamber which results in a fuller burn which results in a more efficient motor. more power with less fuel.

pull the jugs and ship them out to a renowned shop probably cost about 200

take it to a local shop expect to spend 300+

either the 585 or 600 with cut jugs will be a nice performance upgrade.

send the heads also for port and polish plus around .020 off the bottom would be a different animal all together.

in my opinion

hey sul...when they deck the cylinders is it shortned on the top or the bottom of cylinder??
figure you can shave either end to get a flat surface but if your taking off a lot then definitely the bottom.

i had .040 off the jugs and .060 off the heads and the local shop took it all off the top of the jug. had to cut my exhaust flanges to get them on between the fins. :job:

most take it off the bottom the way i understand it BUT you risk cutting the sleeve skirts and it makes them prone to cracking....thats why some builders just cut the heads...trying to figure it out....

IMO, the .600" cam, fix the quench along with porting the heads, add os intake valves, and a little more compression. This WILL give you the best all around combination and reliability that I've found. :2thumbs:

The .569 cam was from Comp Cams. BD was using this when they assembled some of the engines themselves. Don't make sense that S&S would have installed somebody elses cam. Maybe you have a early addition. Or somebody else upgraded the to the S&S rocker boxes :2thumbs:

hey john,do you reccomend taking .040 off the jugs or just cut the heads? i have a 117 epa motor and am fixing to tear it down due to head gaskets leaking and was wanting to get it done the way it should have been done. would it be better to find a set of the large valve heads or just mod the ones i have? thanks

Nope. Bike came like this new. I am the original owner. It was S&S guy that told me it was 569 comp cam and s & s boxes. They shipped that way in late '06

If you're not going to do head work, cut the cylinders. If you're going to rework your heads, the quench can be fixed in the heads on 117" motors.
You will have better results modifying the small valve heads. Easier to control valve seat geometry. :eek:

i also have a 569 comp cams in my 2006 ridgeback that was built in dec 2005 per my phone call to s&s. i just went with the s&s 600 cam myself without cutting the jugs. its still at the shop so i can not tell you how it is cos i have not ridden it yet, but with the big raduis pipes and carb kit and air cleaner it sounds awesome. i chose to not boost the compression due to the risk of getting crappy super unleaded by chance in the future. we are told nevada gets the crappiest gas because of the warmer climate. i know the cam alone boosted the compression a little bit by itself and im fine with the small increase.
