First thing to do is to file a PID (preliminary invention discloser) and the patent attorney will ask you has anyone else seen this? The PID should be filed before anyone see's it, and then it usually takes about 2 yrs for it to be researched and filed if there's nothing else out there like it. You can guess the $$ at this point and then don't forget it costs $$ each year to maintain the patent. Now if some company starts to make this and infringe upon your patent, you better have deep pockets to defend it.
This is where I get discouraged to move forward on something like that, 2yrs to investigate! Damn, that's a long time and like you said, "If someone makes one I'd better have the money to defend it", well I don't have it and you would have to decide if it would be worth putting all that money into it! That's some great info Ker, thanks
