Missing Rotor Button

While out enjoying some nice cruising around Williamsburg and the Colonial Parkway, I did a little clean up on the dog, and upon a closer inspection of my rear disk brake assembly, noticed something was missing. I was to later find out it is caled a rotor button and 1 of the 5 rotor buttons that secure the brake rotor to the inner hub assembly was missing.

After calling around I was told by a Virginia Big Dog Dealer, that Big Dog does not make pr sell them any more for for my 2003 Mastiff, but now sell a solid piece rotor, and would be happy to sell me one.

Before going that route does anyone out there know who, or where I may find just 1 rotor button for my rear floating disk brake setup?

Thanks in advance,

Thanks Loaf,

I will be calling around some bike and brake builders to see if I can locate one.

SF, my 03 Mastiff had one piece rotors. Surpirsed to hear you have floating rotors but they are probably PM's so check with them for new buttons.

I have this one you can have. It has a small nick in it from my rotor lock, but isn't bad at all and works the same. It has the washers and the clip.
Let me know.

For everyone elses info though, they can be bought s as singles from the dealer.

Here is the one I have:

Thanks Bdmridgeback,

The rotor button I have is a design that has a hollow center. I sent an email out to PM but no reply yet. I would like to post a picture but my computer posting capability is challenged. If you would like to send me a PM with you email I can send the rotor button picture back to you.

In my bike photos there is a picture of my right side wheel that shows the missing button. I wish I could show a close up of this button to you all.

Ray,

After speaking/e-mailing with a BD rep from Virginia, it appears that as people were losing these rotor buttons quite often, BD changed over to solid rotors to fix the problem. I must have an earlier model with the floating rotors.

Thanks stlmikie,

I will follow up with him and let you know how it turns out. As a brother Mastiff driver, how do you like yours, got any pictures?

I would say that style is not replacable and are flared on the back side when the manufacturer assembles them making them a throw away.

The replacable rotors (Brembo & PM) have buttons with C-clips on the reverse side so they can be taken apart. I believe, without seeing the backside of yours, that the only way they come out is if they break and fall out.

bdmridgeback,

I believe you are right, and they are flared on the back side. What I am looking for now is a possible/simple fix until I can purchase a new hopefully close to matching rotor. If I can find a rotor button that will fit, I can run it until I find a rotor to swap in. I have a local PM dealer nearby that has a box full of odd buttons and will stop by his shop later to see if one will work.

After a few more beers, and I get over the sticker shock of having a sales rep tell me that there is no simple replacement part, and that I will have to buy a new rotor to fix the problem I will be OK.

Chopper Junkie!
Check with the guy that sells stuff on ebay. He has two accounts under the names shovelhead kicker and bigdog kingpin I think. He is in Kansas near the factory and has a lot of surplus and discontinued big dog parts. He may even have the rotors that match exactly sitting around
here, I found his links for ya!

Items for Sale by bigdogpartskingpin

Items for Sale by shovelheadkicker

Shoot him a question through the ebay site and see if he has one that is not up for auction at the moment but is taking up his space.

Good news,

I not only found a rotor button, but a new shop to work on my Dog. I went out to Master Performance located in Williamsburg, VA. and met with Jimmy McClure (yes Ray he is the son of the late Jim McClure "Da Judge" the Drag Bike racer). Jimmy invited me into his shop to sort through a box full of buttons as well as tell a few stories about his bike and shop. He is a former F-14 mechanic and appears to be quite skilled as his shop (showroom clean) is filled with milling machines lathes and assorted other machines, and the work bays have several V-twins in various stages of repair. Jimmy gave me a button that pretty much matched what I had, and said no charge. With this kind of southern hospitality, I made a point to tell him that I will be back, and will do my best to pass his business on to others looking for some quality work at a reasonable price.

Next on my list will be to have the transmission looked at (can't shift into neutral after being adjusted by another shop) as well as ordering a set of pipes for the dog (previous owner pulled out the baffels) as such it doesn't sound as good as some pipes I have heard.

Anyway, thanks to the Big Dog Biker family for giving me some great info and options. I will be doing a lot of my business now at Master Performance.

Ride safe my brothers,:2thumbs:
