Loose Valve Stem

While doing my periodical air pressure check I notice the front tire valve stem was loose. It was loose enough that it started to back out when I tried to unscrew the cap and I heard the air escaping. This thing is ROUND!!! NO WRENCH FLATS at all! I screwed it back in as tight as I could with my fingers, then I wrapped my plier jaws with duct tape to protect the chrome and tightened some more until the rubber seal was just a bit "squished". The rubber may have actually cracked just a tiny bit so I stopped there and aired it up.

What is the proper method of tightening these babys? Should I replace them with something that can be wrenched? What do you guys do?

The nut is inside the wheel. Gotta take the tire loose to get to the nut. It wouldn't be a "custom bike" if you could get to the nuts easily!:loony:
