Lifter Health?

This is my second time around in a couple of months adj. my pushrods.
Of course I have some horrendous noise from the top end and it is worse than other K-9's around.

The problem is that the intake on the rear cylinder never bleeds down to the point that I can turn it with my fingers like the other three pushrods.

I've checked with varying bleed down times from 10mins to a few hours, I'm thinking that a replacement may be in order or a breakdown of the lifter and inspection at the very least.

Any thoughts or comments?

S&S says that when you dissasemble the lifters to have an extremely clean environment. seems like the smallest debris can cause the tappet to have problems.

20K is recommended change out. i'm overdo.

I had the front exhaust fail at about 3000 miles on a 05. Took it apart and it was full of gunk. Lifter screen was always kept clean and oil changes maintained. Had to buy a set of 4. Still have 2 let me know if you need one. V

If you extend the pushrod far enough then it won't bleed down where you can turn it with your fingers. What you don't want to happen is after "bleed down" you can simply turn the push rod with your fingers because that means that you likely haven't bled the lifter down completely. If after ten minutes you can still easily turn the push rod with your fingers then you have to tighten the push rod an additional five turns to make sure the valve has been lifted off its seat. This is per S&S instructions. In addition if you have the spacers the procedure is slightly different from others. See the S&S instructions and make sure you are doing the adjustment as required:
S&S Cycle | Valve Train Components
If after ten minutes you cannot turn the push rod wait an additional 5 and check again. If you still cannot turn the lifter then you know you have extended it far enough and you can slowly start to back off until you feel a very sliight drag on the push rod as you twist it with your fingers. Once you hit this spot then you know you are at zero lash. Now set the push rod according to instructions.

Kapt, your description above gets to zero lash but with the tappet piston collapsed.

pretty sure the directions most guys here are using (bd manual) start at zero lash with tappet piston extended.

then do your 4 turns tighter

works either way as long as your getting close to ctr of the piston travel (+ or -)

Exactly and thats why I said "Now set your push rod according to instructions" because I keep seeing different explanations on this proceudre so I am avoiding giving detailed instructions as S&S has already done that on their site and everyone really should be getting directed to those instructions.
In addition the BD manual might be okay for some and not for others. My K9 has the HL2T spacers so I have to set mine differently than what the manual states. If I follow the manual my valves are noisy as hell. If I follow the S&S instructions, for the HL2T spacers, and give the additional half turn my valves are very quiet. Some of it comes down to knowing your ride also. And the only way to figure that out is to work on it.

FREEDOM!!!
On the old HD's I always went with solids and Dudley inserts to improve the valve train angle. Worked great with a bit more noise sometimes but easy as heck to adjust!

When I took my motor apart couple of years ago, I went with the JIM's Hydro-solid lifters. They are adjusted like solid lifters and no waiting around for bleed down time. They are noisy  but with my street walker RPGees exhaust I can't hear shit .

Thanks for all the replies, I used the lastest S & S guides for adjusting. S& S seems to think its a stuck lifter also.
Right now I've got it apart but ran out of time while trying to extract the lifter,
tommorow should tell me what kind of crap is swirling around.

The 06 K-9 had 800 miles on it when I got it a couple of months ago now its up to 2500, I think the sitting and dirty oil may be the culprit.

The other 3 rods bleed down and adjust fine, this third one sat all day and was still to tight to turn by hand after adjusting.

Just for curiosity have you checked the screen at the rear lifter block to see how clean/dirty it is?

The screen was very dirty when I got the bike, I'm kinda warped on the maint. thing so the first thing I did was all the fluids new Kp filter ect.

Update

FWIW, I pulled the rear cyl. lifters and gave them a good cleaning. there was a bit of crud in each so I threw them back in. Bleed down was ok after adjusting the pushrods.
Loud clacking noise is gone, now have a noisy quintet of valves clicking away.

I'm kind of tempted to throw in a new set of lifters but I'll give it a few rides and see how it behaves.

I did put in some Marvel Mystery oil also it always cures what ails ya.

PS I have the TP boxes,
