Leaking gaskets

I just purchased (dealer in Dallas) a 05 Chopper with 1,050 miles and naturally it was spotless on the showroom floor. After riding about 50 miles I noticed oil residue in various spots and my mechanic says most of the gaskets need replaced: Inner/outer primary, rocker boxes, cam cover, transmission and inspection cover. My only conclusion is the gaskets dried up from sitting. The shop needs about 12 hours plus materials ($1,300) to stop the bleeding. This is my first experience with a BD so I don't know what to expect in terms of leaks etc. I just wanted some feedback to make sure I'm heading down the right path. The upside is it will be a great time to change out the cam.

Sounds like that dealer is taking you for a ride - they should have known about any such leaks in the first place, before they sold it to you.

I'd get a 2nd opinion if you have someone else to take it to. Has the air cleaner been replaced and any breathers capped off?

I by no means am a mechanic and these guys answer my questions here on a weekly basis to get me along in my learning process. But I can assure you that with very little wrench skills you can change out the majority of the gaskets you mentioned and save yourself a bunch of money. I just changed my primary gasket, inspection plate, derby, etc. and it was about 30 bucks, plus a qt. or Rev Tech and about an hour of my time while me and my bud talked shit.

If you are in the Dallas area, perhaps Jwolf can help with an informed opinion regarding the place working on your bike...he knows the area and the people well. He may also be able to suggest a good shop to go to where you can get a second opinion.

I'd be curious who is quoting so many hours for rocker box gaskets and primary gaskets etc.

I don't know if I'd bring it to Stroker's to be honest. I haven't had good luck with them and, I've caught them in a couple of non-truths dead to rights.

There is a big dog dealer in Ft. Worth but, I've not been there yet. ( It's a HD dealer )

Stroker's is NEVER getting my bike again. There are some good mechanics there but, their parts guys SUCK ASS. They were so bad on an insurance job that I had to wait for 4 days for them to get the paperwork straight AFTER the bike was finished.....

There hasn't been even one time I've brought it there when they didn't forget to order something and, I ended up waiting and waiting for a part that should have been ordered in the first place but, since I know of at least two lies that they told me, I don't know what to believe when dealing with them.

I have to say that if they sold you the bike with all the gaskets shot they should replace them at their cost no questions asked - $1,300 is a disgrace

I would demand that plus some swag for that BS... if you can even trust them after something like that. :bang:

Contact one of your local watch dog groups, or at least threaten to if they dont step up with an option that makes you feel right.

I second that!

Thanks to everyone for the comments. I live in Houston but purchased the bike from Full Boar in Dallas and had it delivered. I find it hard to believe the dealer didn't know since they "serviced" the bike before putting it on the floor. I'll give them a call and see what kind of run-around I get regarding the as-is warranty. The 12 hours quoted was by a small, independent shop that I used for my H-D work. I'll get a second opinion on the hours...would rather use the money to make it go faster.

For 12hrs you could do the top end plus replace the gaskets IMHO. That may be pushing it a little but, not much.

Definately give BDM a call. I had a problem with a dealer and finally called them. They asked who I was dealing with, called them and within 5 minutes of handing up with BDM the dealer called and resolved the issue.

Put it to you this way....

For half the hrs labor you should be able to get the tranny taken off the bike, the rear tire re-aligned, ALL the primary gaskets replaced, the tranny put back on the bike etc. etc.

12hrs labor is WAY too much for a few gaskets.

I've been to Full Boar before and, I think they just get low milage bikes and re-sell them. They've got a service center there.

One of my best old friends has a guy working for him that used to work at Full Boar ( as a mechanic ) and, the guy quit because of business practices they've got. ( I haven't talked to Jason in a while, I'll call him and ask him why Martin quit Full Boar )

Atti2ude have you checked all your fasteners being tight where your leaks are, i haven't seen where anyone has been having any problems with these o rings rather than a gasket, I think it was Sul asked about the venting. my 04 has never leaked a single drop of oil..Good luck..Dave.
